Jimmy McIntosh

This page mentions the above was player-manager for a spell during his three years with Everton in the 1940s and 1950s. Can anyone confirm this? - Dudesleeper · Talk 02:58, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

• It actually means that Jimmy McIntosh was player-manager of Distillery during the decade. At the top of the page it mentions his name alongside others managers of Distillery during that time. - Steveflan 09:47, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Everton Managers Details

The soccerbase list is, in fact, incorrect with regards to Everton's managers around World War II, and maybe some notes to these effects may need to be included.

All "supposed" managers prior to Theo Kelly were actually the club chairmen, as it was the board as a whole who chose the teams during that time. Theo Kelly only arrived as Secretary and, thus, had no direct say in the team affairs (although he would have done indirectly as a member of the board).

The captain of the 1939 title winning side, Jock Thomson, was given the role of "coach" in September 1944, but basically undertook the duties of manager. His contract was for 5 years at £500 per year.

Theo Kelly was appointed Secretary-Manager in July 1946.

These are highlighted in Dr. David France's "Everton Treasures" book which takes all of its information from the official club ledgers.

From my personal research into the history of the club, the actual dates of managers arriving and leaving are:

• Harry Catterick: 17 Apr 1961 to 11 Apr 1973 [4]
• Tommy Eggleston (caretaker): 13 Apr 1973 to 27 May 1973
• Billy Bingham: 28 May 1973 to 10 Jan 1977
• Steve Burtenshaw (caretaker): 11 Jan 1977 to 29 Jan 1977

Notes:

[1] Theo Kelly actually resigned as manager on 10 Sep 1948, but agreed to stay in the role until a new appointment was made - which was on 21 Sep 1948.

[2] A directorial sub-committee assumed managerial duties until new appointments were made.

[3] Although Jock Thomson and Ian Buchan were never officially employed as "manager", their roles as "first team coach" was effectively a managerial post.

[4] Everton played West Bromwich Albion in the evening of 11 April 1973, however, Harry Catterick had officially resigned at a board meeting on the morning of the match. Tommy Eggleston took over the managerial duties for the match although he wasn't officially declared as caretaker manager until 13 April 1973. This is confirmed in the fact that the local newspapers were asking Everton fans prior to the match what their feelings were about Catterick's resignation.

These notes are all taken from local newspaper reports at the time.

"He led the team to win back-to-back Second and First Division championships from 1930 to 1932" - shouldn't that be 31 and 32? --Dweller (talk) 11:48, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
