Some comments on notability

[edit]

I've spent some time getting this list organized and arranged in a tidy way. I've also put "citation" tags after the names of most individuals on the list who don't have associated articles. This is in the hope that some sort of "significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources" will be provided for these people so that the placement here will be justified. This is not really optional: see Wikipedia:Notability (people).

No doubt, some of the names belong to editors or their friends who have no claim at all on notability, but who like to see their names on the listing. These will, mostly, be comparatively easy to sort out and eliminate. I intend to remove listing of the type "Joe Smith, famous musician" or "Mary Jones, notable model" soon, in the absence of any supporting information.

More difficult are those clearly real people who have or had some significant function: high ranking military officer, company executive, member of a music group. These sorts of accomplishments only indicate notability when accompanied by significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. A Wikipedia article is sufficient. Otherwise, at least one suitable citation is called for.

I would be grateful for help on this task, either in finding supporting information or in removing names when unable to find such support. Tim Ross (talk) 15:58, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notability and citations

[edit]

I've just gone through this list, and noted that there are quite a few entries with neither an article nor a citation to show notability. I've red-linked (no article) all of these that have been tagged "citation needed" for over six months, and plan to delete them in a few days. (And I've red-linked other, too, but have no plans to delete ones that haven't been marked as needing citations for quite a while.) I've also added current "citation needed" tags to those new listings needing a showing of notability, and have deleted a few no longer necessary "citation needed" tags, as well.

In addition, I've checked through the list for misleading entries with name links that do not lead to a biographic article, but instead direct to something connected with the entry such as place of employment. These are confusing. Such links, when needed, should be placed in the "Notability" column. Such entries have led to the addition of more "citation needed" tags.

I'll probably be doing more on this, shortly. Tim Ross (talk) 13:29, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with "Faculty winners of major honors"

[edit]

A high percentage of the entries in this category are insufficiently justified. Many, many of them have neither any citation indicating an award nor a Wikipedia article. I, personally, have little doubt that almost all of these individuals are exactly as stated - FSU faculty who have won high honors. I hope someone, though, has access to some legitimate published source which contains this information. If you have such a citation, please let me know and I'll handle the details if you'd rather not. Tim Ross (talk) 14:08, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

some Presidents & Chief Executive Officers

[edit]

I have just deleted these 3 "Presidents & Chief Executive Officers". None of them have articles, although the first two have blue links because they share their names with others. In any case, even if true, being a founder or CEO of a business does not necessarily indicate notability. Further, nothing connects them to FSU.

Redundancy?

[edit]

Is the phrase "MLB baseball player" redundant? Should the table be corrected to state "MLB player"? Bob305 (talk) 20:46, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Current"

[edit]

This list says that many alumni are "current" this and that. These need dates with them. Current when? Are any updates in order? deisenbe (talk) 09:59, 14 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Actors: Megan Boone is missing

[edit]

The actress Megan Boone should be added to the list — Preceding unsigned comment added by 104.129.194.79 (talk) 15:18, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
