Two questions

[edit]

On editing the list of haute-contre roles, I am to represent the following questions.

1. The list scarcely includes any roles created by hautes-contre in the milieu of the Opéra-comique (and outside Paris and the Court): failing sound sources, I have preferred not to venture on these domains (which, moreover, I am no well-versed in).

2. The list ends at the time of Joseph Legros’s retiring in 1783 and takes in but a very small part of Étienne Lainez’s repertoire: although the latter had originally been selected to stand in for the former, as the second leading tenor of the Opéra, and had later replaced Legros as the “principal haute-contre”, holding thenceforth the post for about thirty years, I did not manage to establish whether it is correct or proper to still refer to him as a real haute-contre. Some of the roles he originally created, such as Licinius in La Vestale or Fernand Cortez, for instance, have once and again been qualified in Italy as baritenor parts (though maybe quite high), rather than proper haute-contre ones, and sources will very often already call him (as well as his successor, Louis Nourrit) just a “tenor”, without any further specification.

I do hope that someone else having a greater competence than mine in this matters, will suitably complete the article as soon as possible.--Jeanambr (talk) 13:13, 5 Mars 2010 (UTC)
