Chronological Layout Page Proposal[edit]

I want to list Hebrew Bible events in chronological order from Genesis to Malachi. I’ve already prepared this list, but I want to address what I plan to do because there is an objection to what is considered a “story” versus what is an “event”.

It is common knowledge that the books comprising the Hebrew Bible are not in chronological order, nor are certain events within those books. I want to use this page ‘List of Hebrew Bible Events’ to show the chronological order of events… however, I cannot do it with this current layout, because the subcategory of these events are under each book of the bible and that conflicts with the chronological pattern.

BUT… I’m torn, because… I also believe that each book of the bible should also have its own list of contents (stories? Events?) as such is the current layout.

What I was originally going to do, was reverse the List of Hebrew Bible Events back to the original page: List of Hebrew Bible stories to maintain its current structure… that way I could use the ‘Events’ page to create the chronological listing. UNTIL…. I read this under the [Edit] Tab on the 'List of Hebrew Bible stories' page...

Revision history of List of Hebrew Bible stories
prev) 23:59, 9 May 2007 Eliyak (talk | contribs) (41 bytes) (moved List of Hebrew Bible stories to List of Hebrew Bible events: "stories" has strong overtones of fiction; "events" with the modifier "Hebrew Bible" is more NPOV)

I agree with Eliyak, to a certain point, that the use of the word “stories” could be perceived as works of fiction. However, when referring to the concept of “Hebrew Bible Stories”, I don’t think there is any negative connotation even amongst people who view these books to be literal and factual, nor that there is as much deviation from NPOV as feared. In fact… if you REALLY want to get technical… using the word “event” to refer to bible book contents is probably more of a deviation from NPOV than “stories”… because the use of “event” gives the indication that something did in fact occur… and since there are huge debates about what is myth and what is fact, when it comes down to it, none of these words are "neutral" within the scope of NPOV.

So what do we do? We could drop any debate about the page titles having the words “stories” vrs “events” so that we could just utilize both pages for good navigational sourcing, OR… flood wiki with more pages that have new titles (This means either creating two new pages for these subjects or creating an event list page for EACH bible book), OR… build a kind of content list within in each bible book’s existing main article.

To keep it simple… I just want to use both pages: ‘List of Hebrew Bible Stories’ AND ‘List of Hebrew Bible Events’ as two separate sources of navigation that includes different and various content… since in reality, both of these words mean different things… we just need to determine if the concept ‘Hebrew Bible Stories’ really carries negative weight or if it's really nessessary to define its deviation from NPOV standards as Eliyak fears. I don’t… do you?

What would you think of making the layout to be in a chart form, like this chart? Gospel_harmony#A_parallel_harmony_presentation It could allow people to identify occurrences as stories or other categories. (eg. songs, genealogy) It could have one column for the primary reference, and another column for secondary references. Concerning the term stories, I think that it is neutral, meaning the incident could be true or made-up. Many groups who think they are true refer to them as stories.

Is this article more than a List, and title is Series of Hebrew Bible events?[edit]

I prefer to see the article List of Bible Stories remain a simple list.

I first came upon the Bible events site looking for a list of Bible stories. I do not put POV weight to the word "Story". A story to me is any significant action reported. For example, consider Jeremiah. The Book of Jeremiah contains much prophetic message material, but quite often actions are reported.

I view this site as a powerful Bible list site. I changed the outline to match the Jewish listing of the books in the Hebrew Bible from the common Protestant listing. I think this shows respect for the Jewish heritage. I don't think the list should be done by chronology because the chronology can and is debated. There is no debate of which I am aware regarding the way the books of the Hebrew Bible, or Tanakh, are listed.
