1992 schools openings

[edit]

From: Ellison, David. "Bush elementary, 2 other schools open their doors." Houston Post. Wednesday January 22, 1992. A9. Available at the microfilm desk of the Jesse H. Jones Building of the Houston Public Library Central Library.

3 schools opened on Tuesday January 21, 1992. All 3 schools are a part of a $371 million bond project approved in March 1989 - While students were transferred in the middle of the school year, the same teachers had already taught the same students in the previous overcrowded schools, so the HISD officials said there was little difficulty

  • Barbara Pierce Bush ES in west Houston
    • Named after first lady Barbara Bush
    • Relieved Ashford, Askew, and Walnut Bend
    • Opening ceremony was held on Tuesday, the day of the opening
    • At the opening the school had a mostly White population
  • Crespo ES in southeast Houston
    • Named after Manuel Crespo, who had died recently (identified as "late" in the article) - Crespo, the owner of the Crespo Funeral Home, was, after World War II, known for community work with troubled youth
    • The school relieved Bonner, Park Place, and Sanchez
    • At the opening the school had a predominately Hispanic population
  • Benavidez ES's info is already posted to the Gulfton, Houston neighborhood

HISD secondary schools in 1945

[edit]

This directory reveals the HISD schools in 1945:

  • Patterson, Homer L. Patterson's American Educational Directory, Volumes 26-46. American Educational Co., 1945. p. 528.

High schools

White (which also enrolled Asian and Hispanics)
  • John H. Reagan (now Heights)
  • Sam Houston (was in Downtown Houston at the time and since moved, although the location is not stated in the document)
  • San Jacinto (now closed)
  • Charles H. Milby - 9601 [sic] Broadway (actual address is 1601 Broadway, so this is a mistake unless the numbering was changed??)
  • Jefferson Davis (now Northside) - at Quitman and Tackaberry (current location)
  • (oddly Lamar High School doesn't seem to be on the list even though it would have been open at the time)
Colored (high and junior high combined) (meaning of African-Americans or anyone with black African ancestry)

Junior high schools

White (which also enrolled Asians and Hispanics)
  • James S. Hogg - 11th and Merrill
  • Park - 69th and Avenue I (now Edison)

  • John Pershing - 801 University Blvd. (West University Place) - Later moved to Braeswood Place
