The information I added to this page is available from the RSPB as data files and may be published so long as their copyright is acknowledged. See http://www.rspb.org.uk/ourwork/science/datazone/iba.asp. To be exact, their text is -

"The following conditions apply to use of RSPB biological data:

The RSPB reserve the right to comment on the accuracy of representation of the data in material produced by the recipient.

The recipient and third parties will not publish the data or any part/derivative thereof without acknowledging the RSPB's copyright to the data.

The RSPB endeavors to maintain accurate information. However, the RSPB can accept no responsibility for the consequences of errors or omissions in the data."

Hi Keith. The part which I think will cause us problems us "The recipient and third parties will not publish the data or any part/derivative thereof without acknowledging the RSPB's copyright to the data", which I think imposes a condition which is incompatible with GFDL. The copyvio process should determine whether this is the case, but there is a backlog so prepare to wait a while before this is addressed. A likely outcome is that we should just include the list itself, without any of the supporting data. The RSPB would, I think, have a hard time claiming that as breach of copyright. The data I have included is already a reduced list; the full RSPB data includes grid references, site size and other specifics. I think that removing the site id and thereby reducing it to a site name and description could be argued as it no longer being RSPB data as this information is available elsewhere. If I do this, can we get the copyright notice taken off? Keith Worden 11:26, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Keith, although I'll have to defer to an administrator with expert knowledge of this area, my feeling is that the fact that the description is reproduced word for word is going to be a problem, and that a list with Grid Refs, sizes etc probably wouldn't be an issue. If you were able to rewrite the descriptions in your own words, I think that would be OK. SP-KP 18:31, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
