Three points

[edit]
  • 1) I think the article should also include male given names. Since we're not including every single name, it seems unnecessary to have one article for female names and one article for male names.
  • 2) I think the table should have a column simply to say which language the name came from.
  • 3) I think the more common names should be re-added to the "Irish name" article.

No objection on combining lists. The notes column kind of shows where the name comes from: sometimes the ref specifically says a name is derived from a name in another language, but other times it just says an 'equivalent of xxx'. So that kind of stuff is all there.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 06:08, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gaelic-language names and anglicisations in Ulster

[edit]

In names, as in much else, Gaelic Ulster is quite a different world from the rest of Ireland. While many names behave in Ulster as the page says, or transfer without change, others differ. Some of those below are not "native", but all were used in Gaelic Ulster, in recent or less recent times, and were anglicised or re-anglicised as below for use in official documents, or in popular usage. There are also pronunciation differences, eg. Sibéal, Siubhán, Sineáid, Maighread, Ciarán, Micheál, Tomás are all accentuated on the first syllable in Ulster Gaelic.

Sinead and Siobhan

[edit]

Surely two of the most common names, but not on the present list. (Even in TV's Succession 'Shiv' Roy is officially 'Siobhan'.) 2A00:23C8:7907:4B01:1DB:2B6E:F491:9AFF (talk) 09:36, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
