Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on June 29, 2009.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that although the Stonewall riots in 1969 are generally recognized as the beginning of the modern gay liberation movement, there were over a dozen pre-Stonewall LGBT rights actions in the US (Barbara Gittings pictured picketing)?

Name[edit]

Wouldn't this article be more suitably titled Timeline of pre-Stonewall LGBT actions in the United States?   — C M B J   16:59, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How come? The article is presented in a distinctly chronological format, much like Timeline of LGBT history.   — C M B J   19:33, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pro-LGBT/Pro-gay or even queer instead of homophile[edit]

Many of the people described in the events are referred to as homophiles. While not inherently wrong I feel like it could be confusing to a general audience.

Also homophile is often used to specifically refer to a gay person which may not be an accurate description of all the people involved in the events. Just an example John Rechy does not call himself gay or homosexual even if that might be an accurate description of part of his identity. Silas Mayes (talk) 19:15, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Homophile is linked the first time it appears in the article, in case someone is unfamiliar with the term. It's commonly how these organizations identified themselves and their cause, but doesn't imply that it's the self-identify of every individual involved. It certainly isn't our place to relabel groups of people as "queer" who would have been offended by that, any more than we anachronistically label ancient people as "gay". -Jason A.
