Chronological or alphabetical order?
[edit]Hello all editors, I believe that the alumni should be listed in the order of which they attended NJC (from the first/earliest to the latest/most recent). I would like to hear your thoughts on this.
I am for a chronological list as it gives a better sense of the seniority of some of these people, and when exactly they attended the school. Wiki viewers are interested in the names of the alumni, but they are also interested in when exactly they attended NJC. Nyoome (talk) 07:10, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
- I prefer in alphabetical order. Putting in chronological order would subject the entry to additional verification requirement in sources. If there is/are sources to back the assertion of when the subject attended and for how long, I am fine. However, if it is not immediately apparent, we cannot assume that the subject had attended the school at the age of 17, and for 2 years only. it is possible for sec 5 students to excel, and it is also possible that a student may extend his/her study by a year or two (retaining at both levels is a possibility). – robertsky (talk) 08:21, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
- Edited. Next, this is not an issue at the moment, but how do we arrange them alphabetically if their surname is at the front? Do all the Lees go to the L section, or does Lee Hsien Yang go to the H section? Cheers Nyoome (talk) 05:32, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Nyoome: I am inclined to sort by surname where possible. i.e David Lee (assuming sorting by Lee, David) and Lee Hsien Yang (assuming sorting by Lee, Hsien Yang) should be under L section. note that there are names without surname, i.e. Balaji Sadasivan, these should be sorted by first name. – robertsky (talk) 05:51, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
So Chen Show Mao will be below Lawrence Khong? If I am understanding you right. Nyoome (talk) 15:58, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Nyoome: How is Chen below Khong? – robertsky (talk) 22:15, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Robertsky: I understand now. So Lawrence Khong will be formatted as Khong, Lawrence?
For example, Assoc. Prof. Ho Peng Kee, Lee Hsien Loong, Lawrence Khong, Matthias Yao, Sylvia Lim, will all be formatted and arranged as: Assoc. Prof. Ho Peng Kee | Khong, Lawrence | Lee Hsien Loong | Lim, Sylvia | Yao, Matthias ?
I think this is a sensible, and straightforward approach. However, I urge you to take a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Anglo-Chinese_Junior_College_alumni . "Hossan Leong" is under the L section. This looks awkward and clunky. Will this also be done on this page, with the L area having Sylvia LIm, instead of Lim, Sylvia? Am wondering, cheers Nyoome (talk) 06:06, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
