Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on July 20, 2007.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ...that several of the Orkney islands' highest points are named "Ward Hill" due to the many old warning beacons in the area?

Small Islands

[edit]

The main list has been defined as including only islands greater than 10 hectares. This excludes Calf of Flotta, which currently has no article page. For the record it is 8.5 ha in extent and has a height of 16 m. Ben MacDui (Talk) 18:41, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can South Walls be an island since it is never surrounded by water? Abtract 18:33, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For the record: see previous and ensuing discussions at Talk:List of islands of Scotland and Talk:South Walls. "Our understanding is that until about the beginning of the 20th century South Walls was a tidal island but is now connected to Hoy by a causeway". Ben MacDui (Talk) 14:15, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So it is not an island? Abtract (talk) 15:28, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is an island according to the definition used in this article and elsewhere. Great Britain is connected to France by a tunnel and Awaji Island to mainland Japan by a bridge. They are still generally considered to be islands as are North Uist and Singapore, which have causeways. Ben MacDui 16:40, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
