  • Per WP:WIAFA, this article's table of contents (ToC) may be too long – consider shrinking it down by merging short sections or using a proper system of daughter pages as per Wikipedia:Summary style.
  • Please ensure that the article has gone through a thorough copyediting so that it exemplifies some of Wikipedia's best work. See also User:Tony1/How to satisfy Criterion 1a.
  • Make Tables. The first thing that popped out at me was the layout. The featured lists that I'm familiar with tend to lay out groups of items in tables rather than bulleted lists flanked by lots of white space. You can find a list of featured lists about awards at WP:FL#Social sciences and society. See List of Nobel laureates in Chemistry for example, or Darwin Medal or List of Nobel laureates. I think you could improve this list by trying out varied organizational schemes that would present the information in tables; in some cases, it would probably help to make the columns sortable.
  • Improve Lead. The lead should include something about the history of the medal. How did it start? Who got the first medal? Who awarded the first medal? Any list beginning "This is an alphabetized, partial list of recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom" will be opposed on prose grounds straight away. Make it interesting! You do not need to have the words "list of recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom" in the text, let alone in bold, and in fact it's probably best not to. Look at recent featured lists to see how they begin.
  • Add and Improve Existing Citations. The tag at the top of the existing article should be addressed. Every set of statistics, every direct quotation, every claim that is apt to be questioned needs an inline citation to a source. In addition, every paragraph needs at least one source; if a single source supports an entire paragraph, the citation should go at the end of the paragraph, right after the terminal period of the last sentence. Many of the citations are malformed or incomplete. For example, citations to Internet sources should include author, title, publisher, date of publication, url, and date of most recent access, if all of these are known or can be found.

Marilyn Monroe

On nl-wiki there is discussion and doubt about including this person here. On your list she was added on jan 22 2009 by IP-address 157.233.21.74 and on june 9 2009] the IP addres 68.160.136.17 removed the person. Can any one shed light on this or provide a source for yes or no? It was known that celebrities received the medal when performing for US troops abroad but I can find Monroe performing in 1954 in Korea only while the listing says 1952. Thank you very much in advance. MoiraMoira (talk) 07:05, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Marilyn Monroe was never awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom since it was the Medal of Freedom (a different medal that ranks below the Presidential Medal) that Harry Truman established in 1945, so she couldn't have received it in 1952 anyway. The Presidential Medal of Freedom was established by President Kennedy with an Executive Order in 1963. Joe DiMaggio, one of Monroe's ex-husbands, did receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.
The January 22, 2009 edit should be disregarded, the June 9, 2009 deletion of it was correct. Hope this helps, --Shearonink (talk) 17:21, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
I have done some further research and am re-posting it from Talk:Marilyn Monroe.
I can find no documentation that Monroe won the Medal of Freedom. The only mention I can find of any type of "medal" being awarded to Miss Monroe in this general timeframe is the dog tag given to her in 1954 by the U.S. Far East command (as seen here). This listing is from the May 2006 Hunt auction of DiMaggio/Monroe memorabilia.
Hope this helps, Shearonink (talk) 17:37, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your input. --Kalsermar (talk) 18:51, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
Thank you very much Shearonink for all your work in this matter. The list of names (and I do know the medal of freedom is different and precedes the presidential medal of freedom) was copied form en-wiki way back so indeed the anonymous addition was unsourced and wrong and the later deletion was correct. I will remove the mention on nl-wiki now. Kind regards, MoiraMoira (talk) 17:07, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
Not too put too fine a point on it and I am really trying to put this to rest but one clarification is definitely in order. You will not remove the mention on nl:wp because it was already, and repeatedly, removed by an IP-user and yours truly. I think you are trying to say that you won't revert the removal anymore after you had done so multiple times even in light of many contributions on various talk pages indicating the erroneous nature of your edits in this matter.--Kalsermar (talk) 17:52, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Precedence

So...let's presume Jimmy Doolittle was still alive. He was awarded both the Medal of Honor and the Pres Medal of Freedom. Both are neck orders...how would they be worn together??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.118.253.107 (talk) 01:55, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Organization

This organization scheme is completely useless. It should be categorized by year and probably tableized as well. The categories like "literature" can be added to one of the columns. I would say use a sortable table. IvoShandor (talk) 03:01, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

In an effort to better organize the information in this article I have tried a different table for the media section. I added a "Contributions to" column instead of having these listed under a subsection heading. Obviously, this list needs help as its it difficult to navigate. I would like some feedback on this additional column. I also hoped to start discussion about how we could pare the section headings down. The executive order establishing this medal lists the criteria of award as: (1), the security or national interests of the United States, or (2) world peace, or (3) cultural or other significant public or private endeavors." Can we pare the sections down to Security and National Interests, World Peace, Cultural Endeavors, Public Endeavors, and Private Endeavors? EricSerge (talk) 20:07, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
I think the "Contributions to" column is useful, and IMO most of the other tables should have a similar column. But I think paring down the sections to the handful you described might make each section unwieldy. Are you thinking detail columns like "Contributions to" could make the larger sections manageable? Removal of Constance Ray Harvey

The specified link has rotted, but the article is still available [[1]]. The article mentions receiving the Medal of Freedom "after the war." The [Medal of Freedom] is distinct from the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Based on this, I've removed Harvey from the list.Larry (talk) 00:27, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Presidential Medal of Freedom given General Colin L. Powell on 30 September 1993

I would be grateful for your help in correcting General Colin Powell's listing -- His second Presidential Medal of Freedom (which was awarded to him by President Bill Clinton on September 30, 1993) should be listed as the Presidential Medal of Honor with Distinction.

And this error is reflected in several Wiki pages about the Medal of Freedom -- - Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipients - Presidential Medal of Freedom - List of Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients

Also, the little picture of his second Medal should be the one with the gold eagle (as opposed to the one with the silver eagle, which is his first one).

(I'm a newcomer so am very uncertain how to add/edit Wikipedia. I'm sure there are many sources that can be referenced but the one I have at hand is the General's autobiography, My American Journey. He describes the ceremony on page 589 in the chapter "Mustering Out".) Leslie Houseman (talk) 21:16, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Leslie Houseman

Medals by President

The Medals by President section does not list any sources. Additionally, they do not match the entries in the article. The article lists the following per president:

  • Barack Obama 120
  • Bill Clinton 89
  • George H.W. Bush 42
  • George W. Bush 83
  • Gerald Ford 31
  • Jimmy Carter 24
  • John F. Kennedy 21
  • Lyndon B. Johnson 47
  • Richard Nixon 52
  • Ronald Reagan 99

Since it is both unsourced (and has been tagged as such for over a year) and is inconsistent with the article, I am removing the section. meamemg (talk) 20:48, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

Removal of "Gabriel S. Abshire"

I deleted the entry under the Military category for the name Gabriel S. Abshire. No such mention anywhere else, particularly on the US Senate's official list. My guess is that this was a bit of a joke on the part of the editor who included it; of course the name can be reinstated if someone can supply a verifiable source. Apollo 13 Mission Operations Team

I think we should have a single line for Apollo 13 Mission Operations team and not name individuals.

This source says As the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) director of flight operations at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Sig accepted the Medal of Freedom from President Richard M. Nixon on April 18, 1970, on behalf of the entire Apollo 13 mission operations team. On the platform were the Apollo 13 flight directors Gerry Griffin, Gene Kranz, Glenn Lunney, and Milt Windler, plus NASA Administrator Tom Paine.

There is a difference in who was on the platform vs who the award was for. From Nixon's speech: So, as President of the United States, I wanted the opportunity to thank everybody who had helped to make this flight a success, the success that it was, and all the others a success. I called Dr. Paine immediately after splashdown and said, "I would like to do that." He said, "How many days or weeks or years do you have? There are about 300,000 that we would like to thank." I said, "Well, then I will come down to Houston and present the Medal of Freedom to you, Dr. Paine, for the whole NASA organization." And now we see the greatness of a really superb executive. His response was, "No, not to me." He said, "Let me think a moment, and I will tell you who it ought to be to." He said, "Let's give it to the Apollo mission operations team." And he suggested that we have on this platform today the members of that team: Sig Sjoberg, Glynn Lunney, Mill Windler, Gerald Griffin, Gene Kranz. They are here and I wonder if they would all stand, please.

AmericaSpace phrases it In the days that followed, the men would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honour, and, perhaps equally fittingly, the heroes of the Mission Operations Team – represented by Apollo 13’s four flight directors, Gene Kranz, Glynn Lunney, Milt Windler and Gerry Griffin – were similarly acknowledged.

I think any individual names listed undermines the intent that Dr. Paine had to include the entire team. A select few were present to accept the award, but they accepted it on behalf of a large list of names that works in Mission Control during the mission. Am I misinterpreting something, or is the change I am suggesting warranted? Kees08 (Talk) 23:58, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

@Kees08: Well, I am interested in learning if Weaver, McBarron and Sjoberg actually received the medal so I could potentially make their article. Unfortunately, I can only confirm Sjoberg like you did. No google results for the other two. I also just found that only Sjoberg is mentioned in a book of medal recipients, on GBooks. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 00:42, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
Could be because he was the one to be handed the medal from Nixon. Kees08 (Talk) 02:13, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Timing of additions

I removed three entries in the Sports section today as they were for people that have not yet received the award. These were Jerry West, Roger Penske, and Bob Cousy. Until an award is actually given to someone (all three of these people are in the news recently as "to be awarded" or similar language) adding them to such a list strikes me as clearly WP:TOOSOON. Leaving a note here for discussion in case of dissenting views. Dmoore5556 (talk) 06:48, 2 July 2019 (UTC)

Rush Limbaugh

Listed as "Hatemonger", not conductive to neutrality or thoughtful listing. I highly suggest an edit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.186.148.53 (talk) 05:28, 5 February 2020 (UTC)

Awarded twice notes incomplete?

The detail list of the awarded shows Walter Cronkite twice, while he is not listed in the "Three people, Ellsworth Bunker, John Kenneth Galbraith, and Colin Powell, are two-time recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom." paragraph section. (This same paragraph is also in the general article that linked to this article.) It should also be noted that the article on John Kenneth Galbraith states that he was awarded this medal once, and had been awarded a lessor/different ("Medal of Freedom", not PMOF) award previously. (The notes for his entry in the tables say neither.)69.234.97.103 (talk) 01:57, 21 November 2013 (UTC)

Don't call other editors vile. The "Hate Monger" characterization is accurate, but unencyclopedic, so it's gone ... which is what one can expect of Wikipedia. Maybe learn more about it--including what it's called--before attacking. (And as for the response from 68.12.22.47: Whoosh!) -- Jibal (talk) 22:24, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Combine lists?

There are about 35 separate lists on the page. Wouldn't it be better to combine all the lists together and make them sortable? There are about 652 awardees so it would be a large list, but not an absolutely huge one. Different categories or columns would have to be listed. Perhaps photos could be included in one column - almost all the awardees almost certainly would have a photo. I could do much of the work, but would like to have broad agreement and input before doing so. Smallbones(smalltalk) 15:01, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

I noticed the same thing and it is a little annoying. I was thinking alphabetical would be appropriate, so readers can skip down to whomever they were looking for. Plus, it avoids duplication, as note in the Alan page section below.Argentine84 (talk) 18:17, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

I added an External link to an old White House memo that includes exactly this combined list, from 1963 through 2002, sorted first alphabetically and then chronologically. Great if Wikipedia could show something similar for the complete history of recipients, as a single table with sortable columns. —173.68.139.31 (talk) 08:46, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
The current categorization is completely invalid, as it violates WP policy of no original research. -- Jibal (talk) 22:34, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
I agree, I think we should make this into one table. As far as I can tell, everyone is in agreement, so whenever someone feels like doing it they can start. Looks pretty good to me. We should probably order them chronologically and then alphabetically by default (per the IPs suggestion above) if anyone gets time to go through that big effort. That was a lot of work thanks for taking the initiative! Kees08 (Talk) 18:50, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
Looks good to me as well. But it is unclear how the individuals are sorted in the combined list, if at all. I -assume- there is some way to use the sort feature while in edit mode so it defaults to having them chronologically - can anyone confirm or deny? It would be a shame for someone to take the time to order them if there is any easier way. And yes, good work. ‡ Єl Cid of ᐺalencia ᐐT₳LKᐬ 19:56, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
  • Looks good to me too. This is a blast from the past - I'd apparently forgotten about it. Good job @MJL:. I'll get in on this next week though. It could be presorted, by president and year to have it start off chronological. That can take awhile, but is theoretically simple! I'd also like to add photos. 99% will have one available. Incomplete list

The first sentence says the list is incomplete, but has anyone actually compared to see if it is or is not complete? Kees08 (Talk) 22:44, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

@Kees08: I think it should be complete based on Wetterau's book and archived copies of the Senate.gov link, but it doesn't hurt to double check. The only exception I can think of are the specific names of the Apollo 13 Operations Team. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 23:05, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
