Why do you say we assume marie is a smashing weapon?

[edit]

It is almost certain that she is a hammer. Like thors hammer. Same name same element -.- So say shes a hammer of thunder/electricity Ļăŋ (talk) 23:59, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Giriko

[edit]

isnt Giriko a relative of Arachne and Medusa? He is the two witches brother.[LINK REMOVED]

That's actually more likely a term of respect, rather than him actually being their brother.-- 00:01, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I dont see how that is being respectful but OK. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.55.251.40 (talk) 00:57, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because that's what happens in Japanese sometimes. A term like Nee-san (姉さん) or Onee-san (お姉さん) are both respectful terms used in Japanese to either refer to a blood-related older sister, or an older girl/woman as a term of respect.-- 02:15, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well can you change or someone change that kenshin is the strongest antagonist? That is speculation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.55.251.40 (talk) 18:50, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean Asura, the kishin?-- 02:51, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stein a Terry Pratchett reference?

[edit]

He seems very much like a reference to the 'Igors' of the Discworld series, the 'considers himself and everything else an experiment' bit especially. The stitches seem to confirm this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.32.55.237 (talk) 23:19, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Other than the painfully obvious reference to Frankenstein due to his name, everything else is original research.-- 23:51, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A character can be a reference to more than one person. Its not like there's legislation stating that you can only tie your character to a single other work. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.32.55.237 (talk) 04:20, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

But unless you can prove it, it's original research and cannot be included.-- 04:27, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mifune Name Origin

[edit]

Where is it said Mifune is named after Toshiro Mifune? It's not a common last name, but by no means highly unusual.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Cheeked (talkcontribs)

Toshiro Mifune was the star of the famous film Yojimbo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yojimbo_(film)) and Yojimbo is the Japanese for bodyguard, the charachters are also extremely similar. 83.104.138.141 (talk) 14:53, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it doesn't matter how similar the characters are. If it is not explicitly stated Mifune is named after Toshiro Mifune, then it is OR and cannot be included. ~Itzjustdrama C ? 17:55, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you'll ever find an explicit statement which says what or who a character is named after. Take Franken Stein for example. It's never said he's named after Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, but it blatently obvious. Would you consider mentioning Frankenstein in Stein's article as OR?Arnizipal (talk) 13:20, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion, it's very nearly. But the reference is painfully obvious, how many Frankensteins are there that aren't based on Shelly's? I'd say the same, being nearly OR, for Ox Ford/Oxford, Harvar/Harvard, Jacqueline O. Lantern Dupré/Jacqueline Mary du Pre or nearly Jack-o-lantern in my opinion, Marie Mjölnir, and so on. But the references are more obvious in their cases. I don't think we should word it "so-and-so is named/modeled after so-and-so". I believe "so-and-so's name is similar to that of so-and-so" although that probably won't make it less OR to others. On second thought, I'm not going to argue if you put down Mifune/Toshiro Mifune. Maybe you can stick the name similaries in a "Creation and conception" or "Creation and influences" whichever's more fitting. However, the section requires more than name similarities. ~Itzjustdrama C ? 20:27, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Problems

[edit]

Two problems I've noticed with the article. The lead is too long and it's in-universe. (Although this could help with the latter) I'll tag the article. ~Itzjustdrama C ? 22:04, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. Now the lead is too short and so are the character summaries, in my opinion. ~Itzjustdrama C ? 02:19, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Crona's gender

[edit]

In 017. "The Eve's Fight to The Death" (part 2) (前夜祭の死闘) , Medusa said that Crona is her son , or this error is due to translation mistake ? By the way , the version I read is Chinese Traditional Version. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.218.85.229 (talk) 12:07, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According to the original Japanese version, she uses the term "child", but does not denote whether Crona is male or female through context. Obviously, the author is making it ambiguous, and he even pokes fun at it in a later chapter when Patti wonders aloud if Crona is a boy or girl.-- 19:51, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I always assumed Crona was male; "his" voice doesn't sound very feminine.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.5.76.1 (talkcontribs)
Crona's voice is by Maaya Sakamoto, so whether it sounds masculine or feminine is irrelevant when the VA is a woman.-- 01:36, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Some more evidence for Crona being a girl at the end of chapter 60 of the manga. Unfortunately still nothing definate. Arnizipal (talk) 12:15, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't agree that it's definitive evidence. Yes, it looks like Crona's a girl, but all the definitive parts are conveniently covered.-- 20:38, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I said. Looks like a girl but nothing definate (which makes writing about Crona a pain btw). Arnizipal (talk) 17:48, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The officially translated version, in Yen Plus, refers to Chrona as a boy; I know that even proffesional translators sometimes get the message wrong, but as far as the arguement goes, this is the closest to definitive evidence for Chrona's gender (if only for now).User:nemen32 (talk) 12:15, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's gonna be pretty embarrassing for them when Crona turns out to be a girl.-- 04:57, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So far as I've read it Yen Plus only uses "he" and "him" a few times. There's no strong gendered reference to Crona in there, it looks like a lazy pronoun to me since English doesn't have any gender neutral ones that can be used. Dantman (talk)21:59, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I like this article but I feel it is dishonest in its revelations of plot and character development. Since there are multiple authors to the material in the page, I felt I should simply place the notice here, and put the copyright infringement notice in the article just below where I believe material starts to spoil the plot.

Wikipedia has a disclaimer. It should be expected that spoilers are present. Wikipedia:Spoiler states It is not acceptable to delete information from an article because you think it spoils the plot. I will admit this action might have been rash on my part, but I have alerted the project at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Anime and manga#Copyright_Infringement__on_List_of_Soul_Eater_characters. ~Itzjustdrama C ? 00:59, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't been able to see any direct copies or other instances of where copyright infringement is blatant. Character spellings

[edit]

Okay, so what are the official spellings of Crona/Chrona and Medousa/Medusa? Is there some new info with how Yen Press has romanized their names, or is this still coming from the anime?-- 21:58, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As I recall it was stated that "Crona" was used inside of one of the credits, "Chrona" is not in common use, only some older fansubs use it.
As for Medusa, that's where things get fun. See the Soul Eater Wiki's article on Medusa Gorgon for the citations. Medusa's prison cell has had her name written on it in plain English in the raws, in the manga she was listed as "Witch Medusa GORGON" and in the anime they listed her as "Witch Medousa". I do not know why the anime decided to alter the information this way. The manga has had that information listed for awhile, enough that for awhile we've had Medusa cited as "Medusa Gorgon" on the Soul Eater Wiki, the existence of "Medousa" only happened recently. Dantman (talk) 07:35, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, here is a screenshot of the third ending where Crona's name is spelled. Dantman (talk)

You might actually want to look over the Soul Eater Wiki for some references, citations, and names, as it's looking the wiki is actually a bit more accurate on information than Wikipedia. Namely Medusa, Marie Mjolnir, Samantha, Asura, Eibon, Noah, Mifune, Jack the Ripper, Flying Dutchman, and Death. Dantman (talk) 08:30, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone have the Yen Plus magazines where they've been serializing the translated manga? We could really use those book cites. Also I haven't seen the particular spelling "Mira Kniges" anywhere other than here, as well as the claim that it's a play on the pronunciation of Knives. Where did this come from? BlazerKnight (talk) 04:28, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have everything from November (When they started serializing chapter 1) to July, except for June which I thought I bought when I actually bought July, and June hasn't been in stock for ages. For each chapter I've been making mass piles of notes on nearly any trivial piece of translation that could serve as citation. I've been collecting them on the Soul Eater wiki in Wikia:souleater:Forum:YenPlus+ Updates. Dantman (talk) 07:50, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good list. Is it too much to ask you to start adding references in the form of WP:Cite book? They would really help the verifiability of the article. Also there still seems to be some contention over the main character's name... Soul Eater Evans. What is Yen Press' stance on this? Is "Soul" and "Eater" a nickname or part of his given name? How should he be listed here? Thanks. BlazerKnight (talk) 01:01, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That part hasn't been translated yet, but it hasn't been clarified within the manga yet either. "Eater" definitely isn't a part of his last name, and I doubt it's a part of his first name either. Everyone around him tends to just call him "Soul," including his brother and people who only know him as a pianist. Ohkubo has also stated in an interview that the title of the series may not solely refer to his nickname. His name's never been listed as "Soul Eater Evans" in the manga either. -Mr. Toto (talk) 03:48, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ragnarök?

[edit]

On what basis is this weapon called Ragnarök in this article, and not Ragnarok? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Apoyon (talkcontribs) 15:27, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some people just use scanlated manga scans as source.. --staka (TC) 01:07, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Giricco?

[edit]

What's the source for "Giricco" rather than "Giriko"? I have never seen the former used anywhere. Dantman (talk) 17:42, 30 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. You can't even write a "c" in Japanese so I'm guessing it's from some scanlation or fansub. While we wait for the offical English translation later this year I've changed it back to Giriko. Arnizipal (talk) 12:12, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, "Giricco" is official. Ohkubo wrote "Giricco" several times in the "How to Make Deathscythe" guidebook. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.102.118.150 (talk) 23:35, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Soul Eater Evans?

[edit]

Isn't "Eater" just part of Soul's nickname? I thought his name was just Soul Evans, with "eater" stuck on (since it's what he does). Shouldn't he be listed as Soul "Eater" Evans or something? -71.205.242.159 (talk) 06:35, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To quote Nenena on Livejournal: "I know that it's total bullshit. The manga is named after Soul, period, end of story. I think a lot of fans conveniently forget that Ohkubo originally created this series as a one-off short story; it was only because the short story became so popular that Ohkubo was able to turn it into the first chapter of long-running series. So when Ohkubo initially created Soul Eater, including the title, he wasn't planning anything beyond what happens in the first chapter of the series. Hence, Soul Eater always was and still is named after Soul, and that hasn't changed in any way shape or form since then. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.233.31.147 (talk) 03:52, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Holy shit, someone just quoted me totally out of context. Yes, "Eater" is just Soul's nickname. The livejournal comment that the idiot above me quoted was in response to a rumor that Ohkubo named the series "Soul Eater" in reference to a yet-to-be-revealed villain. No, the series name "Soul Eater" does not refer to a villain. It refers to Soul "Eater" Evans. But "Eater" is still just Soul's nickname. The series is named after Soul's nickname. Learn to read, people. Here's the comment in question: http://nenena.livejournal.com/268897.html?thread=2059873#t2059873 - nenena on livejournal.

Re: Black Star's name

[edit]

In accordance of WP:NC#Special characters and WP:UE, the use of non-Latin alphabets should be avoided. Since the ☆ is merely stylistic, it should be removed.-- 01:58, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Are we sure the ☆ is just stylistic? I think it is legitimately a part of his name, I don't remember any point in the manga or anime whereupon his name was spelt otherwise. Seeing as they can choose their own names upon enrollment at the DWMA (I believe this was clarified in "Soul Eater Not!"), and seeing as "Soul Eater" was also a chosen name, I'd say the star should be included, being a part of Black☆Star's chosen name. Oceanembers (talk) 17:06, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The star is not pronounced, so it's merely there for decoration, and should be avoided per what I quoted above.-- 21:39, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup

[edit]

I've been doing some extensive cleanup of this article over the past few months and I've just about finished. Would it be ok if I removed the "cleanup required" sign from the top of the page? I've also been thinking about putting in some references to relevant episodes in the various sections. Does anybody know a good exmple of how to do this (eg. in which order do you put the name of the artist, publisher and episode title). Arnizipal (talk) 00:31, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaning up is one thing, but writing it in an out-of-universe perspective is quite another, so while the cleanup tag might be able to be removed, the in-universe tag stays for now. As for the referencing, only things pertaining to anime-only events should be cited with {{cite episode}}. Otherwise, all the rest of the other info can be cited with {{cite book}} doing one cite per manga chapter (instead of by volume). Examples of which can be seen at List of Naruto characters and List of Tokyo Mew Mew characters.-- 00:56, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh sure, I wasn't planning on removing the "Mostly in Universe" sign. Frankly I have no idea on how to get an Out-of-Universe perspective on Soul Eater. Others will have to look into that. Thanks for the heads up on how to make reference tags. I'll try and insert some later on. Arnizipal (talk) 21:48, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The page still needs extensive cleanup. For one thing, it's much too long. Secondly, it includes a mass of characters that aren't even important. Why do we need headings for Risa and Arisa, Mabaa (she can be mentioned under Free's heading), Samantha, and all of these bit characters that show up for a few panels in the entire series? -Mr. Toto (talk) 20:38, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This article seems bloated

[edit]

The aticle is huge and has plenty of information that is more suitable for a game guide. I think some unnecessary material should be removed. Kotiwalo (talk) 17:04, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. There's too much here--especially the listings of characters that make only one appearance. The bios themselves are way too long as well. I'm willing to assist in the cleanup, though. -Mr. Toto (talk) 20:13, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I looked through to see which characters we could completely omit from the article and which ones we can mention in passing. The only witches that should be listed under the heading are Medusa, Angela, Arachne, Eruka, and Mizune. Even then, their bios are way too long. Mabaa is already mentioned within Free's bio. White Star, Eibon, Little Ogre, the Clown, Gopher, and Fisher King should all be removed. Eibon, Gopher, and the Clown can all be mentioned within Noah's bio, White Star can be mentioned within Black Star's bio, and the Little Ogre can be under Soul's. Wes can be listed under Soul's bio too. The entire list of "Other Antagonists" should be removed. -Mr. Toto (talk) 17:04, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree completely.-- 00:16, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree too. Kind of a shame to remove so much information, but I guess it must be done. One more thing - Soul is now a death scythe as well as DWMA student. Should he be moved to the appropriate section? BlazerKnight (talk) 01:34, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think he should be moved since for most of the manga he wasn't a death scythe, and not even in the anime, plus he's still a student at Shibusen.-- 01:45, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why removing information, the more the better.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.46.75.116 (talkcontribs)

Death The Kid's Weapons

[edit]

The article does not contain any information on the design of his twin demon guns.

I believe they most resemble Browning Hi-Powers (although modified appearence). Reedy180 (talk) 11:55, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Name Origins

[edit]

Should we start including name origins for more of the characters? Take Sid Barret for example, his name is a reference to Syd Barret or Blair or Medusa named after the Greek mythological figure and name puns like Jacqueline O'Lantern. I think these are interesting bits of trivia that should be added to the article. Nyeh--71.160.8.98 (talk) 04:09, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Strictly speaking, none of the name origins should be there unless supported by reliable, third-party sources.-- 07:31, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Shinigami and Death Scythe

[edit]

Under shinigami's description: "His current Death Scythe partner is Spirit, Maka's father, who he often finds annoying but is eager to use since he is the only Death Scythe who actually is a scythe." I'm new to the show so correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't soul eater a scythe as well? Not a 'death scythe' in terms of a fully refined weapon but his weapon form is a scythe isn't it? --98.18.48.233 (talk) 03:28, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

-That section of the article was written well before Soul was turned into a Death Scythe in the manga. At that time Spirit was the only Scythe-type Death Scythe. 63.169.70.126 (talk) 16:25, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Work in progress - Full article cleanup

[edit]

Well, it's been far too long since anyone has done anything major to this article, so I think it's high time we clean this up.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you my sandbox: User:Immblueversion/sandbox.

Basically, I've drawn inspiration from the List of Fullmetal Alchemist characters article which, as I am aware, is not necessarily "good article" material. There are still some kinks in that article, meaning there are kinks in this one as well. But mind you, it's still a work in progress since I'm still writing things down, and if I'm one to talk, I believe it's not only more coherent, but also more consistent than the current version of the article.

As you may notice, I've taken the liberty of including the characters of Soul Eater NOT! in this list, labeling them as such. I've also tried my hand at categorizing certain characters into certain groups, again based on the FMA article. And while some characters may appear out of place in terms of subsections (for example, I've created a general section for antagonistic witches, but left characters such as Arachne in an article for members of Arachnophobia, while Justin Law is still listed among his fellow death scythes), I believe such categorization reflects their roles in both the manga and the differing storyline in the anime. Of course, I listed Crona as an antagonist, but that is the kind of role s/he is most associated with. I also tried my hand at making a "creation and conception" subsection, though the information I've gathered is from an archived source that also happens to be in French.

Now, to improve on what I've already come up with, I suggest we start making references directly from the manga chapters and anime episodes themselves, using the Gnr, Gnn, and Ref templates. I also suggest we limit the article name translations to the ones used in the Yen Press manga translation for consistency, noting any other existing official translations and spellings, such as the Funimation anime dub or any Japanese media spellings (providing the necessary references, of course). If possible, we should create a "reception" subsection as well. Lastly, we should probably get the page semi-protected to keep it from getting vandalized, especially by those who try to challenge the truth about Crona's gender. It may even help people understand that we will never know what Crona is supposed to be until (or if, for that matter) the mangaka says so.

I hope you will take all of this into consideration, and would greatly appreciate any help. User:Immblueversion (talk) 03:25, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and if you read it, you may have noticed I called Soul as "Soul Eater Evans". That's because I divided the "protagonists" section between the main series "Soul Eater" and the spin-off "Soul Eater NOT", and if I were to title Soul's section "Soul Eater", it would snap back to the whole section titled "Soul Eater". I'd like your thoughts on whether or not to split the "protagonists" section as I have. User:Immblueversion (talk) 04:23, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Character Updates

[edit]

I think that we should update the character profiles and from recent chapters of Soul Eater. Toxin45 —Preceding undated comment added 22:31, 20 May 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Soul Eater and Maka History

[edit]

Maka doesn't make Soul a Death Scythe by defeating Arachne and swallowing her soul because in the fourth to last episode in soul eater, Lord Death Wields a Death Scythe, Just One Step from Utter Darkness, Asura kills Arachne himself and swallows her soul, so that would be impossible to kill her twice, you need to look over this and fix it, it is incorrect. In fact, in the anime series Soul Eater, even at the very end, Soul still doesn't become a Death Scythe. He doesn't ever in the whole series. Please fix this error.

Great Old One Confusion.

[edit]

I'm part of the Soul Eater Wiki and acts as an administrator. I want to let you know that the "Great Old Ones" are not a group. They're the 5 people that represent a particular madness. The confusion came from Scanlation and it's poor description. Yen Press makes it a bit more clear.

The group the article is referring to is "The Eight Warlords", which is also known as the "Eight Shinigami Leigons". 108.65.218.154 (talk) 09:32, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
