USS Fulton

[edit]

In The Naval History of the War of 112 Teddy Roosevelt mentions the first USS Fulton. She was one of a kind, built in the general 1820ish period. The US Navy's first steamship, armed with two large guns and a ram. An internet search indicated she was rebuilt as the Fulton (2), the paddlewheels being moved from the centerline to the sides, but there is no information about its first form. Little help?

Apparently they're not the same ship. DANFS says the first USS Fulton was completed in 1815; "she was used as a receiving ship until 4 June 1829, when her magazine exploded, killing 30 men, wounding many others, and totally destroying the ship."[1] "The second Fulton, a side wheel steamer, was launched 18 May 1837 by New York Navy Yard; and commissioned 13 December 1837, Captain M. C. Perry in command." She was destroyed by the Confederates in 1862.[2]
