Organization

[edit]

Update: Alright guys, I did a lot of hard work to split this list up. I managed to make a substantial amount of progress. HighestDragon (talk) 04:03, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This list is getting a little unwieldy. I suggest we split it up somehow. I don't know which way is best. United States/International? By month? By country groups (all countries starting with a-c, d-f, etc.)? johnpseudo 15:15, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I like that idea, split it up by months sounds better, maybe even make a box for each month with a location of where the marathon occours and who the major sponsor is like...ING New York City Marathon (for example.) --DJREJECTED 02:19, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I like the idea of organizing by time, or if we're going geographically, by broad areas (e.g., continents, as opposed to a section for the U.S. and a section for the rest of the world). Akbeancounter 23:35, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I second the date proposal.Bah23 14:46, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone know how wikipedia handles the same data in multiple formats? For example, it would be nice to have:

  • Alphabetically
  • By country
  • By date

But its important that you only need to add events in one form. If someone can point me in the right direct I'll take care of it. Bah23 13:51, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is possible. You can use sorting tables. Look at [1] and [2]. Basicaly you need to create a table of three columns. First column is Name. If you click that, you get marathons sorted by name alphabetically. Second column is Date. If you click that you get all table sorted by date. Third column is Country. Clicking this will sort all table entries by country alphabetically. So this is possible, but it is very big task to gather all the data and create the table. Maybe if someone creates the table with sorting ability, community will fill it with actual data. 80.43.94.8 20:19, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm this is great idea but currently the table is sorting month alphabetically rather than chronologically. Is it possible to change this?122.62.32.214 (talk) 10:28, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sample table

[edit]

Here's an example of a sorting table that could be used. Any thoughts on columns or information that should be added/deleted? For example, I don't know that the "Link" column needs to be here, I just included it to show that a non-sorting column can be part of the table. Also, having every single marathon in this table might be a bit much. Should there be a separate table for each major region; Asia, Europe, North America, etc. Prost! Hammersbach (talk) 17:09, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Name City Region Country Date Link
Wineglass Marathon Corning New York US October WineglassMarathon.com
Dublin Marathon Dublin - Ireland October DublinMarathon.com
Grandma's Marathon Duluth Minnesota US October GrandmasMarathon.com
Quebec City Marathon Quebec City Quebec Canada October QuebecCityMarathon.com
Warsaw Marathon Warsaw - Poland September WarsawMarathon.com
Harpeth Hills Flying Monkey Marathon Nashville Tennessee US November HarpethHillsFlyingMonkeyMarathon.com
Prince Edward Island Marathon (PEI, Canada) Charlottetown Prince Edward Island Canada October PrinceEdwardIslandMarathon.com
I like this, but it would take a lot of work. I plan on adding some marathons from Taiwan. How do you propose we carry this out? ludahai 魯大海 (talk) 01:57, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to separate the list by major regions. Also I would like to eliminate the column that links to the event's homepage. The name of the marathon could link to the article and if there is no article it may serve as incentive for editors to create one. Unless someone objects I will start on this. I anticipate that it will be at least a month before I have enough done of each of the tables to start posting them to the article. Prost! Hammersbach (talk) 16:30, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've implemented your table. Feel free to alter as you deem necessary. I don't really want to go to all of the work of providing weblinks to each marathon, but I think that having them actually provides an incentive to create a wiki article - it gives potential contributors some place to start. Questions: Should the "City" specify starting city, finishing city, the city largest of the two, or both? (At least one marathon crosses state lines.) Should this list include road and trail marathons? What about ultramarathons? Location (talk) 03:14, 4 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No need for the "Region" column, when the city is noted. Anyone curious enough to want regional information, they can just click into the city article itself; and the "inception" column should stay for sorting purposes. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 20:10, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think the "region" column should be used for the second tier geopolitical division in the country (i.e. state/province/prefecture,etc.) For example, the Boston Marathon would be Boston for 'city' and Massachusetts for 'region' while a race in Taipei would be Taipei City for city and Taipei Municipality for region. Comments? ludahai 魯大海 (talk) 00:23, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am OK with the removal of the "Region" column. I am also OK with removing "Finishers" and "Runnings" since those columns make the list particularly difficult to maintain. Location (talk) 18:51, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I concur with eliminating the "Runnings" column. As for the "Finishers" column, maybe we could make a one time change to something that would denote the relative size of the marathon. Prost! Hammersbach (talk) 13:06, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps, use a size indicator of (Large, Medium, Small), etc. similar to t-shirts sizes - where large, medium, and small have arbitrary sizes assigned. E.g. Large (>25,000), Medium (>5,000 to <25,000), and Small (<5,000). Number based on number of finishers in recent year. Using "averages" would fall under WP:OR. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 22:34, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Alaska

[edit]

I added a few marathons in Alaska. Since some have silly names (the Humpy's Marathon, the Alaska Salmon Run) and another is held in a teeny tiny island town (Prince of Wales Marathon), I figured somebody might think I'm making them up. But here's the list from whence they came: AK Marathons. All are certified tracks, and Boston qualifiers. I'm training for the Humpy's Marathon, and I might join the 10K group at the Mayor's run; when those come around, I'll write up an article, maybe take some pictures. Akbeancounter 23:35, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Some of the links are long (ex. Charlottesville Marathon) and it wraps and looks awkward. You think we just have the display text be "Offical Site" (ex. Offical Website --Omarcheeseboro (talk) 02:45, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That would certainly look better... I was just trying to get information into the table that could be cleaned up a bit later. There was some discussion above as to whether official websites should be in the table. As I mentioned in Talk:Marathon, with all the information on Ken Young's Association of Road Racing Statistician's website, I'm not even sure this list is needed and I would be open to reverting it back to its previous form. Location (talk) 03:50, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

There are a number of links to various sites that have marathon racing calendars. Most of these are for-profit sites that contain information that is redundant from one to the next. I would be in favor of scrapping all but the ARRS and AIMS links. Thoughts? Location (talk) 21:31, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Any objections? Location (talk) 21:21, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

It is nice that links to the specific marathons are included. However, as a reminder, Wiki is NOT a directory, even for marathon races. So, I'm going ahead to change the links as "references". Feel free to fill in other pertinent information. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 04:09, 22 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good. As I mentioned above, I started adding the links more as incentive to make it easier for others to expand the information in the lists. I'm still not sure that half the columns are necessary. Location (talk) 04:13, 22 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yea. I'm questioning "Region", "Runnings", and "Finishers". Though, I can see the logic behind the "Finishers" column to indicate the size of the specific races in terms of participants, etc. "Region" is kind of redundant because the city column should take care of that. After all, cities and regions go hand-in-hand. As for "Runnings", this may be cumbersome as the number of "runnings" increase per year, especially for the annual ones. I suppose the "Inception" column can imply that. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 04:41, 22 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that there are a few too many columns and that "Region" and "Runnings" are the obvious condidates for deletion. The table looks very good, kudos to all who have worked on it. Prost! Hammersbach (talk) 12:17, 22 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

IAAF labels

[edit]

Well, here's something to consider: http://www.iaaf.org/LRR09/results/index.html Just possibly a way to sort out some of the more "reputable" marathons from the rest. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 08:36, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List Partitioned

[edit]

OK. I partitioned the whole list, separating by alphabet. Of course, this measure is temporary, just to make it easier editing this table. It'll be easier to do in parts. Things to do:

  • Provide links for marathons without any.
  • Remove marathons that cannot be sourced.
  • Fill in data.
  • Remove unnecessary columns.
  • And anything else relevant.

Finally, this article needs a decent introduction. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 05:33, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say the Runnings and Finishers columns could be removed. I'm really not sure what purpose they serve. Runnings would need to be manually updated each year to keep it current, and can be determined by the reader anyway, based on Inception. And Finishers is what, the number of finishers of the first event? Average finishers. Total finishers since the race began? In the latter two cases, this column would also need to be updated every year to keep it current. -FeralDruid (talk) 18:18, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Gonna agree. The ambiguity of certain columns does not help this list at all. Then what to do about any defunct marathons? If the defunct are removed, then the article title may be changed to "List of active marathon races". KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 19:31, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Defunct marathons

[edit]

I am working my way slowly through the list, and I found a defunct marathon race. Should defunct marathon races be included in the list? If so, should there be a column for the last year it was run? If not, should there be a list of defunct marathon races? Coyets (talk) 15:07, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have to wonder if there is any real reason to keep a defunct list. "Notable" races are the active ones anyways. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 19:32, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Then again, imagine a farfetched situation such as the New York Marathon becoming defunct, which is a remote possibility. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 21:43, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The solution: excise only those marathons which are both defunct and redlinks. GregorB (talk) 18:07, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with GregorB. To refute an earlier point, there are very few active marathons that have as much historic significance or are as notable as the Polytechnic Marathon. Location (talk) 04:34, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

US Marathons 2009 Statistics

This could be useful for filling in some information for some of the marathons run in the US. http://www.marathonguide.com/Features/Articles/2009RecapOverview.cfm KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 22:25, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Separate List for Large Marathons

[edit]

Perhaps it would be best to have a separate list for the largest marathons. The list of ALL marathons appears to be too bulky for any significant improvement. Not sure about this idea though. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 20:38, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, and propose we have a list of the 100 largest marathons. Racepacket (talk) 21:50, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to see this article improved very much, but I don't like the idea of restricting it to 100 or so marathons, regardless of the criterion ("largest" presumably measured by the number of finishers, but surely there are notable "small" marathons). What if guys who wrote Line of succession to the British throne said: "Hey, let's keep it reasonable and limit ourselves to top 100"? (I'm only half joking here...) GregorB (talk) 20:46, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, one such list exists based on official criteria. Of course, that'll be useful for color coding in this list. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 03:35, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Participants Question

[edit]

Are we counting only the marathon "distance" participants or the "event" participants? Including the secondary races (half-marathon, 10km, etc). CanadianLinuxUser (talk) 15:02, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Better off omitting the column all-together. Given the size of this table, and the frequency of marathons (annually), it'd make maintenance of the table not feasible. Plus, there's the confusion of what to count (finishers, participants, by average, total, etc.) KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 19:47, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree... kinda confusing. CanadianLinuxUser (talk) 20:22, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, too. Although I added the column, I mentioned over a year ago (see above) that I am OK with its removal. Location (talk) 20:26, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ok... killed the column. CanadianLinuxUser (talk) 04:14, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good. Should the "Month" column be scrapped, too, since information there isn't particularly useful? Location (talk) 04:58, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I like the month column myself. Most insane runners plan their vacations around marathons so they need to find marathons by month. :-D CanadianLinuxUser (talk) 11:09, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Month column is fine. It's not like schedulers like to "randomize" the month of their particular marathons. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 00:38, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've actually come across quite a few races that jump from one month to the next for various reasons. For that reason, I'm not fond of the month column. It's not a big deal to me either way, though. Location (talk) 04:36, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As recent edits have revealed, the Mexico City Marathon is one such example. Location (talk) 17:43, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Those are not the "rule" (for want of a better term). It is not a common event for marathons to parade all around the calendar. Quite the contrary, most marathons try to keep the same week even. (NYC marathon, first Sunday of November) Like I previously said, I would like to keep the month. CanadianLinuxUser (talk) 17:54, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Of course most established marathons are scheduled for the same month every year, however, the (frequent) exceptions to the rule are what make the column problematic. I briefly browsed the ARRS website and elsewhere for what I consider to be relatively major marathons and found the following events that have all changed months within the past two runnings: Budapest, Turin, Tokyo, Yokohama International, Auckland International, Stockholm, Los Angeles, and Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Marathon. I know the San Francisco Marathon will be held in July instead of August this year, and Milan has changed every year for the past six years. (Incidentally, there are also plenty of other major races that have recently changed which week in the month they are run, too: Montreal International, Hong Kong, Dallas White Rock, London, Berlin, Rome, Rotterdam, Paris, and Tucson.) I did not check what I consider to be smaller marathons or all the marathons in this article, but I imagine there are many similar instances, if not more among less established races. Again, it presents a minor issue with the article's maintenance and accuracy, but it's not a big deal to me. Location (talk) 22:30, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Darn it !!! That is a lot... and just a quick glance on your part.... I feel a change of opinion on my part coming :-D CanadianLinuxUser (talk) 22:47, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It might be better just to place a footnote for the month column stating that the month indicated is the month in which the very last race was held. I dunno. Location (talk) 22:59, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmmm footnote seems like a good idea. CanadianLinuxUser (talk) 14:19, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List Purge

[edit]

Hmm. I propose: for any marathon currently listed without a link and/or reference - and there is no existing separate Wiki article -- the marathon should be removed. KyuuA4 (Talk:キュウ) 00:28, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How can this list be so bad. It doesn't even include all the majors... --85.115.53.201 (talk) 11:10, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed split

[edit]

Some of the continent-specific lists already exist, and it seems counterproductive to have to fact-check and update multiple articles. I propose to trim down List of marathon races to only list World Athletics Label Road Races (formerly IAAF), and to use the continent-specific articles for an all-inclusive list. (Whether to keep all the red links for this is another discussion, I suppose.) 162 etc. (talk) 20:55, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have created the missing region specific pages but I am unsure what this page should look like so I am not touching it at this point. I do like the idea of using the list on this page for the Majors, Gold, Silver and Bronze races. Gusfriend (talk) 06:01, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've completed the split. List of marathon races is now a dabpage, and all redlinks have been deleted from the continent-specific lists. The result is much tidier. 162 etc. (talk) 21:57, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. That looks a lot better. Gusfriend (talk) 22:03, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
