Closure- 9X1

[edit]

Regarding Porter Heights 9X1 North Houston Airport (was Williams Airport) This airport closed around the begining of July 2021. http://montgomerycountypolicereporter.com/development-takes-over-another-porter-landmark-north-houston-airport-williams-field-closes/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.231.41.242 (talk) 05:27, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This list features a truly excessive number of redlinks. Many of the redlinked airports most likely fail WP:GNG and WP:NBUILD due to a lack of coverage in WP:SECONDARY sources excluding WP:ROTM mentions in aviation-related government and navigational databases. Per WP:REDNO, I think these redlinks need to be removed at the very least; however, the inclusion of numerous non-notable airports strikes me as a violation of WP:NOTDIRECTORY. My impulse is to simply erase all of the airports without Wikipedia articles, but I would like to first seek consensus and see if anyone objects to removal of this content. Two side observations from far-away Europe:
1/ I revolt at the general use of the airport term at any aviation terrain, even if I know it is US typical, it still contradicts our own definition in the airport article, which limits usage of the term to aviation terrains with additional features for commercial air transport;
2/ more or less on similar grounds, aerodromes with a valid IATA code stand a better chance of being acceptable as airports; however, IATA have been cleaning up their list, and not before time. Careful checking of current validity is in order! Jan olieslagers
But all that being said, a red link ought not to be a reason for removing an entry from a list; it should rather be taken as an incentive to create the missing article. (talk) 18:20, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I revolt at the general use of the airport term at any aviation terrain, even if I know it is US typical... I understand what you mean, but yes, it's not unusual in the U.S. for aviators to call anything with a runway an "airport", grass and gravel runways included.
...a red link ought not to be a reason for removing an entry from a list... a red link is certainly not the deciding factor in and of itself, but my primary point is that WP:NBUILD states that engineered constructs do not have inherent notability, and most of the redlinked airports aerodromes in the article lack significant coverage in secondary sources other than WP:ROTM aviation databases. Hence my desire for consensus: is it preferable to remove the redlinks per WP:REDNO, or remove non-notable listings altogether per WP:NOTDIRECTORY?
