Redirecting

[edit]

This article consisted of a lead copy/pasted from Bamboo; a grossly oversized collection of images that violated WP:LAYOUT#Images and that had no relevance to the article's topic, since nearly all of them failed to specify the species depicted; and a list that was largely duplicative of Taxonomy of the Bambuseae and the articles linked therein. In short, there seems no reason for this particular presentation of material that largely exists elsewhere in Wikipedia. I think redirection is preferable to deletion, as the title does appear to be a reasonably likely search term; and I'd suggest that the author's energies might be more profitably directed toward expanding or creating articles on the individual genera and species of bamboo. Suggested move

[edit]

As I suggested in the AfD discussion, I think this page should be moved to List of bamboo species as a more appropriate title since it is, after all, a list and articles that are lists are usually titled as such. Additionally, species lists are usually titled this way. See List of Utricularia species, List of Drosera species, List of Aster synonyms, etc. Thoughts? --Rkitko (talk) 03:01, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Species"

[edit]

A major problem with this page is the conflation of species with cultivar, variety, and subspecies. Please sort this out. Many of the cultivars, such as the variegated ones, may be unpublished, so it would be improper to write Genus species 'Cultivar'. Beyond that, I think the scope of this article, titled "Bamboo species", is restrictive to actual species (including their subspecific ranks, e.g. subspecies and variety). There are far too many cultivars to list, so perhaps this page should be moved to List of bamboo species and the cultivar information split off to List of bamboo cultivars such as other pages have been (e.g. List of Canna species and List of Canna cultivars).

As an illustration of the above point, take the entry toward the bottom listed as "Fargesia murieliae Unnamed Seedling". The description gives the following: "A man made species, made in 1907, that lasted until the 1980s, then the species became extinct." This is wholly incorrect as the species is Fargesia murieliae and it itself is not extinct. It is not a "man made species" but rather perhaps some kind of cultivar. Cultivars aren't typically thought of as being "extinct" but rather "lost to cultivation". Extinction is usually reserved for actual described taxa. Strange lead language

[edit]

Very weird language in the lead "was only added" added by who? Is this standard biologist jargon? Also on one of the photos is something about proud and too big to eat.! --41.177.196.161 (talk) 16:50, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. Thanks for pointing it out! AtticusX (talk) 17:31, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

inconsistent units of measurement

[edit]

heights and diameter are measure in mm or cm, only one is needed. Also alternates between imperial measurement and metric in the order of which is presented 1st, metric should be presented 1st as it is the international standard. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:8003:3430:4F00:C008:3BF2:6DA4:B40B (talk) 01:13, 3 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
