Antietam?

The numbers for the Confederate deaths seems to be inconsistent with the main article on Antietam. Does anyone know how these should be reconciled? Cdecoro (talk) 22:01, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Suggestion: percentages

I think this table could be improved by taking into account the population of the USA at the time of these battles. Adding a column giving the percent of the American population at the time might give this more meaning. For example, my quick calculation shows Gettysburg moving up to 2nd place by such a measure. Battle of Normandy

Is Operation Overlord/the Normandy Campaign really a battle? Most books I've read don't consider it one, when they note the Battle of the Bulge or the Battle of Okinawa as the largest and bloodiest battle fought by the US in World War 2. It was a three-month campaign that stretched all across northern France. Not really the same thing as a struggle for one city and the surrounding area, or one island less than half the size of Luxembourg, or an area of operations smaller than Belgium.--Nihlus1 (talk) 23:47, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

casualties during gettysburg?

the article on Gettysburg estimates about 50'000 deaths, why only 7000 here?

29 BILLION people?

Normandy had "29,204,958,894 killed"? Over 29 BILLION people?Stevepyong (talk) 09:38, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

Flags for opposing countries

There seems to be an edit war over the flags. Pittsburgher says there was already a discussion and it was agreed upon not to use the flags. -- Esemono (talk) 01:53, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

No, the disagreement in question was about the losses from the Battle of Okinawa. On topic for this page, the user I reverted incorrectly used the modern German flag to represent Nazi Germany, additionally he has a history, in articles covering battles between Allied and German forces, of maximizing Allied casualties in the infobox while minimizing those of the Germans on extremely tenuous grounds.

Title

  • These aren't "American battles", they are "battles in which America has participated". The Rambling Man (talk) 16:02, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Good point maybe: List of most lethal battles with American participation? Hold off on any name changes though. The article is about to go to the front page as a DYK Dec 1 2017 -- Esemono (talk) 05:25, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
  • In addition, the list appears to consider only the number of Americans killed, not those of the enemy (or US allies). Thus Highway of Death is excluded. List of battles with most United States fatalities would remedy that. A related issue is that both sides' deaths are considered for the US Civil War, so it's not just "United States military". An alternative fix would be simply to exclude the Confederacy from this page and let List of costliest American Civil War land battles do that work. jnestorius(talk) 11:39, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

Name Options

So as far as I can see we have a couple of option suggestions for the move:

  1. List of most lethal battles of the United States military
  2. List of most lethal battles with American participation
  3. List of battles with most United States fatalities
  4. List of battles with most United States military fatalities
  • I'm going to have to side with jnestorius on this one and vote for List of battles with most United States fatalities -- Esemono (talk) 01:56, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Support 4 - I'm going to have to side with jnestorius but add "military" -- Esemono (talk) 07:41, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Support 1 - I'd say the first one, easily. The second option implies that it includes dead on all sides, so I think it should be ruled out. The third option is pretty the much same as the first one, just that it could imply US civilian dead is included too.--Roddy the roadkill (talk) 05:39, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Good point, added a fourth clearer option as well -- Esemono (talk) 07:15, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
  • Relisting comment: Is there an actual proposed target here? I see there's a consensus to move, but I'm relisting this to allow time for some more clarity. Bradv 04:38, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

Civil War battles include deaths on both sides

The article should be updated to make it clear that both Union and Confederate casualties count for the Civil War battles. It is not obvious that both sides are considered "American", particularly because of the use of the Confederate flag for the opponent during the Civil War. Roches (talk) 10:58, 2 December 2017 (UTC)

Maybe we should do as jnestorius says and remove Confederate casualties. That would solve the problem -- Esemono (talk) 02:02, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
