Abandoned/not navigable
[edit]We need a consensus on how we divide canals between Canals in England/Scotland/Wales and Canals that are abandoned/not navigable. I today moved two canals from the former to the latter (Newcastle-under-Lyme and Southampton & Salisbury), as neither could be deemed to be 'canals in a poor state of repair', but still noticeably canals. I'd favour a system whereby a un-navigable canal that could feasibly be restored would be included amongst the national canal lists, whilst those of which no trace remains or could obviously not be rebuilt due to later developments over the route, being in the abandoned list. This is of course, still open to judgement. Grunners (talk) 14:00, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- Well back when it was first created it was for things like the Croydon Canal which doesn't meaningfuly exist any more. Latter it moved towards no navigable sections of any significance. If you want to include non navigatable canals in the main list I would suggest sticking to those with an active restoration project.Geni 21:15, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Daventry Canal
[edit]Should we list this as an active propsal or just treat it as an arm of the Grand Junction Canal?©Geni 02:24, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

[edit]I can't see the Witham Navigable Drains or the South Forty-Foot Drain in the main article, only in the navigator. Do I need new Spectacles? --Robert EA Harvey (talk) 18:21, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
- The South Forty-Foot Drain is in the List of rivers of England article. The Witham Navigable Drains should probably be there also. There's this slightly artificial distinction between canals, rivers and navigations in Wikipedia that leads to some odd results sometimes. Chris55 (talk) 21:37, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Fully navigable/part-open/abandoned lists
[edit]There doesn't seem to be any consistency in the break-down of the canal listings. England is separated broadly into fully/part-open, or at least in-water, and fully abandoned, whereas the other home nations are all lumped into together with no distinction given in the list (meaning a click through to the article required to see the degree to which the canal is extant). The lists would, I feel, benefit from being re-organised to be an at-glance more useful indicator of the state of the canal. Grunners (talk) 10:21, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
- I suspect that someone thought this a good idea but has not maintained it, for whatever reason. As an example, the Anodover canal is in the main list but has been closed. The problem with splitting lists like this is that you need to know the status of a canal to find it. My irritation is that I looked for the ~Ulverston canal in the main list and could not find it. My intention is to combine the 2 lists. I may add a status column, so that any one who wants just abandoned canals can sort. Op47 (talk) 17:21, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Trewyddfa Canal
[edit]I wonder if we shouldn't include this short canal in the list for Wales, with an appropriate note. It gets a brief mention in the history section of the Swansea Canal page (para 2). Though forming a part of the main line of the Swansea Canal, its 1.4 miles were constructed by a third party who separately levied tolls on its use. Geopersona (talk) 07:38, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
