Coroebus of Elis is listed as a pastry baker on his page, not as a chef —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.78.102.186 (talk) 13:09, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If he was in charge of his own kitchen, he was a chef. That's all the word mean, nothing more, nothing less - the head of a professional kitchen. In the United States (and perhaps elsewhere), they call any professional cook a chef but that is not standard usage. Mike Hayes (talk) 16:42, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Standards, qualifications

[edit]

What are the standards for inclusion on this list? --jpgordon::==( o ) 17:25, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alas, this article is a good candidate for deletion. Not only is there no particular standard, I don't think it would be possible to come up with a viable standard beyond simple notability. Because that would admit thousands and perhaps tens of thousands of notable chefs worldwide and throughout history for all types of cuisine, this lends itself better to a category structure than a list article.Any attempt to create a "super" category of especially notable or great chefs would inevitably be a matter of opinion, whether that of the article editors, food critics at large, or others, and there is likely no well-accepted standard for that. To the extent there are some official designations (e.g. Michelin stars) those can and often are handled by their own specific categories and articles, and cannot claim to be a definitive list. Accordingly I have left a note for the article creator.- Wikidemon (talk) 08:34, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(I was considering nominating an article you created, List of chefs, for deletion for reasons I explained there on the talk page... basically that such a list is inevitably either indiscriminate, incomplete, or over-large and can best be done as a category. As a courtesy I'm just notifying you instead in case you have other ideas or a suggestion for how to improve it. If the redlinks are serving as a pointer to articles that could be created, perhaps that is best put in Wikipedia space, e.g. in a wikiproject list of articles to create. I copied the article from French Wikipedia because I felt that it does serve a legitimate need to have a chronological list of famous chefs (being a culinary arts student myself), so I have little to do with its content personally but I certainly agree with you that it is arbitrary and could become overlong. If the chronology could be retained in a Category, that would serve the same purpose but I would request that you do not delete it without creating such a category first and transferring the data to it. The question of notability is one that applies to all biographies on Wikipedia, of course, and is always arbitrary. So as this is a debatable question for any article about anyone, that alone cannot be used as a criterion for why the article shouldn't exist. The article is not overlong at this point, so to delete it in anticipation of this occurring, is not, I believe, a valid reason for deletion. The article could be split into different countries, if this should happen at some point. Alternatively, the article could be renamed "list of chefs from antiquity to the 20th century, which would put a curb on that happening. Actually, I think I might do that myself if no one else does. (Beside the fact that at this point anyone in the 21st century section would have to be ten years old at most, this being 2010.) If you think it should be deleted here, then obviously that opinion has to apply to French Wikipedia as well (whence I translated the article) which means you should leave the same suggestion there. I speak and write very mediocre French but I actually had the temerity to contribute an original article w:fr:Hedwige Chrétien. Nevertheless, I would not be so bold as to suggest to admin there that they delete an article myself but if you would like to do so, go ahead. (actually the word there is not chef, it is cuisinier, which means both those who prepare food and those who are involved directly in that process professionally.) Chef? or broader?

[edit]

The first line reads "famous chefs and food experts". As discussed above, "chef" is already a broad enough category (maybe too broad). Including in this category "food experts" makes it even broader. Consider:

  • Coroebus of Elis -- not a chef, and not renowned for his cooking, but for his running!
  • Alexandre Dumas, père -- a writer who wrote a dictionary of cooking
  • Many cooking teachers / TV personalities, including Delia Smith, Julia Child, Nigella Lawson, none of whom is a "chef"

I don't think it makes sense to have a list of all food-related people -- as someone said above, categories are useful for that. --Macrakis (talk) 19:43, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
