Delete list?[edit]

This list appears to be copied (down to the typos) from http://www.uptu.ac.in/inst_info/inst_list.htm. Should this article exist, or should it be replaced with a link to that page on the main Uttar Pradesh Technical University article? Anirvan 21:57, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is OK to have the list here. In fact it should be up-to-date also with the data on the UPTU website. As of this writing, I see that there are 190 colleges mentioned on the UPTU site whereas this article cites only 175. Now someone has to find out what is missing and what is different and keep the two in sync. You may say that for this very reason, we should just have a link and remove the entire list, but I still feel that the list is important. Slowly people will add link to their college page and it will be nice to have this page then.

A note about external links[edit]

I saw too many colleges that had external links cited or written inline. It looked as if they were advertising. I turned those into wikilinks. Some colleges may appear as redlinks. Those who are interested in providing further info about the college may do so by creating a page for it where the official website may be listed.
This is just a list and too many external links should be avoided here. See WP:ELNO -- Ashay (talk) 16:50, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ATTENTION!! List out of date!![edit]

Update and number the list. It also includes colleges that are now affiliated with MTU. See List of colleges affiliated with Mahamaya Technical University. These colleges are now affiliated with MTU but are listed on this page.

Page Move[edit]

Should the page be moved to List of colleges affiliated with Gautam Buddh Technical University after cleanup? -- Ashay (talk) 16:50, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Now List of colleges affiliated with Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:01, 4 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Updation[edit]

I've updated the list from kyc.aktu.ac.in. The next questions for further imrpovement as I see it are:

  1. Should the no. of seats column be kept or removed? In case it is kept, will referencing kyc.aktu.ac.in for the figures be sufficient?
  2. Should city sections with very few colleges (say, <3 or <5) be merged into a single Other Cities section?
  3. How can we improve the lead, and the list in general?

Regarding the list of programmes (and number of seats), I strongly support removing them, from the same reasons WP:UNIGUIDE is against adding lists of programmes to articles. I also think the "Institute Code" and serial numbers are pointless and have no encyclopedic value. I think combining cities is confusing. Regarding improving the lead and list, I don't see the point. This list has very little encyclopedic value. Frankly, the only use of this list is as a redirect target. If you want to improve the lead, add sourced information about the affiliation process and some summary information. To improve the list do some research and add encyclopedic data. --Muhandes (talk) 17:25, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Muhandes: WP:UNIGUIDE is refering WP:NOTDIR and stating that we don't list all programs. As far as I remember, this page used to list the no. of seats by streams (i.e. no of seats separately for the various branches of engineering offered in the colleges). This was then reduced to the no. of seats in a program (so that only the total no. of seats for B.tech were listed). Considering that the programs mainly reflect the field (engineering, pharmacy etc.), would it be okay then to add the fields offered instead of the program? E.g: A college which offers B.Pharm would have the pharmacy field listed, B.tech/M.Tech become engineering, and so on. As far as the affiliation codes are concerned, they kind of act as a unique identifier, since many colleges have similar or identical names. I'm also thinking about marking the constituent and govt. colleges as such in the list, but not sure whether to do that with footnotes or background colors (maybe the former is better?).--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 17:38, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have less of a problem with listing fields, although I'm not sure who is going to maintain this data. As for affiliation code, since no reader knows this code before reading the page, how does it help them to have a "unique identifier"? If two names are close, it is ideal for the reader to see them both and disambiguate by location. Marking constituent and government colleges is a good idea. --Muhandes (talk) 18:42, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ok, so I've removed the course-wise seats column.
  • I've added the "Fields of Study" column in the Dhampur and Najibabad sections. Please take a look.
  • As for the maintainance part, WP:WRITERS!
  • Regarding the affiliation code, I think a sizeable portion of readers would be familiar with the codes, and thus the code will help them find the article of the college they're looking for (since ultimately this list is going to be a giant redirect of sorts).
  • Will get to marking the constituent and govt. colleges.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 16:22, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good luck with that. Ping me if you need anything. --Muhandes (talk) 14:50, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
