I would like to add a table showing the largest companies listed on Oslo Stock Exchange, their ticker number and, where possible, corresponding "US" tickers (over the counter or US exchange listed).Johnfravolda (talk) 18:25, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. There are a few problems that have to be faced in doing this; first, because market capitalization (MCap) is volatile, we do not put it in Wikipedia articles—rapid changes make it difficult to list them in a good order. It may be possible to circumvent this by taking a fixed date (preferably December 31 or some similar "neutral" date and adjusting once to four times a year. Adding the Oslo tickers are a good idea, but personally I do not see the need for the US tickers—if they are added all foreign tickers must be added, also European ones (for instance Norsk Hydro). Other possible things to add include revenue (financial year 2007), profits for that year. But make sure to not discriminate; do not add only the largest companies; for that there is a list of the OBX Index. Good luck:) Arsenikk (talk) 20:16, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A few more comments; since OSE is a Norwegian institution which trades in NOK, avoid using USD (especially thinking of the recent volatility of NOK versus USD). I know I'm being picky, but as an encyclopedia we have to have neutral point of view; we can't make a list of the biggest companies on a stock exchange, we have to make a list of all of them. What you have done so far is good, but has to be done will all the companies. Due to this I have reverted the edit, but go into the history and retrieve it and expand to all companies, and it can replace the current list. I am sorry for this cumbersome approach, and would love to help you in the task, but I just do not have time this week. Arsenikk (talk) 20:25, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the input. I would love to do a complete list, but I fear I will never get around to listing all OSE companies and especially not finding all listings and OTC variants outside the US. The impetus for the table was to answer the question "how do US citizens by shares listed on the OSE?". Origninally this question was put to me by people interested in one particular stock. I thought it would be usefull for my own purposes to do more extensive listing to better research the OSE and the question of foreign stocks sold OTC here in the US.

Perhaps instead a sentence with a link to Google Finance and short instructions on how to pull up and understand ticker symbols would be a good addition to the list page? Johnfravolda (talk) 20:52, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
