Requested move

The result of the proposal was I propose that the word "Contactee" is clearly an undeniable a noun used to describe "the state of proclaiming to having been in contact with extraterrestrials", rather than "the state of actually having been in contact with extraterrestrials". Therefore, regardless of whether an individual has or has not "actually" been in contact with ET they should be called a contactee. Thus, this page should be renamed "list of contactees" or "list of self-professed contactees".

A person should only be referred to as an "alleged contactee" if an allegation has been made against them by a third party. For example, were the head of NASA to appear on CNN and say he had proof that the head of the CIA had been consorting with Martians to overthrow the Federal Government, then he may be referred to as an "alleged contactee". However, if the head of the CIA said it himself (made a self proclamation), then he would merely be a "contactee".

Is there a "rename" forum, or do all the discussions happen here? Is anybody here concerned that the title may violate WP:BLP, after all 99% (if not 100%) of people on this page declared themselves to be contactees, I don't think that any of them were ever accused of being a contactee by somebody else. - perfectblue 16:28, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, all contactees are alleged until such time as actual contactee evidence happens. Removing "alleged" is borderline POV-pushing. NPOV does not mean we have to take the lunatics listed here at their word. --ScienceApologist 17:33, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I stand by what I aid earlier. Contactee is a self appointed title. It simply means that they claim to have been in contact, not that they actually have been in contact.
I don't see "alleged" as any worse than "(self) professed" or "purported". I'm fine with any of those, but not "list of contactees". --Minderbinder 16:28, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose the move. I agree with ScienceApologist. "Alleged" is a necessary part of the name. Mike Christie (talk) 16:41, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, where no allegations have been made, the use of the word alleged is prejudicial. It implies that they have been the subject of an accusation and thus also that being a contactee is a bad thing. For example, "George Bush is an alleged member of the Republican party", "You're girlfriend is allegedly blond". - perfectblue 17:23, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Contactee defines the term as "persons who claim to be in regular contact with extraterrestrials". That makes "self-professed" redundant, and "alleged" and "purported" don't make sense within that context. The category is at Category:Contactees, the article is at Contactee, and WP:BLP issues were brought up in the recent AfD due to the wording of the current title. It seems that all the concerns of the opposers were dealt with in the original move request. I see no reason not to move the page to the simpler title. Dekimasuよ! 07:20, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article has been renamed from List of alleged contactees to list of contactees as the result of a move request. Although I consider it unlikely that the title would have been misinterpreted as meaning "those accused by others of having alien contact", I also see no problem with having the shorter title, since we are consistent in using a definition of "contactee" (which I assume to be the usual definition outside WP) which states that they are people who claim to have been contacted by aliens. Words like "alleged" are to be avoided. The case of spiritual mediums is different, because the definition of medium does not included "claimed". --Stemonitis 08:26, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
