Move[edit]

I don't think it was a good idea to move the page from "List of fictional Democrats" to "List of fictional Democrats (TV series). In Wikipeida naming conventions, an artile is prefixed with "(TV series)" to disambiguate a television show from a concept of the same name. For example, the Family Matters (TV series) article has "TV series" on the end of its name to separate it from other concepts called Family Matters. However, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper doesn't have "TV series" on the end of it's name because there is no other concept called "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper" except for the television show. For an article to be named "List of fictional Democrats (TV series)" would mean that it is an article about a television show called "List of fictional Democrats", and that there are also other concepts called "List of fictional Republicans" that are not television shows. When I created this list, I did not intend on it only being about television show characters. The list just happens to include only television show characters so far. I would have intended for characters from literature, film, etc. to be in the same list, though it might be a good idea to keep them in separate sections, if they are ever added. Even if television characters are kept in separate articles, I think it would be best to name the article "List of Democratic television show characters". Q0 08:42, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • If your intent is to list fictional Democrats in any media, suggest rename to List of fictional Democrats and make sure you state this at the top of the article. If, however, you'd now prefer this to become a list of fictional Democrats in TV series, suggest rename to List of fictional Democrats in TV series (or "...in television series").     • I would be willing to add introductory text that indicates that the list is to include fictional characters from all media. For the time being, I think it would work best to have one list for all media and not to have television show characters separated. If in the future the list gets big, and has entries from television, film, literature, etc. then I think it would work best to split the list, and television show characters I think should be renamed "List of fictional Democrats in television" (or "List of fictional Democrats in television series", if it is supposed to exclude made for television movies). liberals[edit]

I noticed the following entries were added to the list, in the section of fictional liberals. In order to be included a list, the characters must explicitly refer to themselves as liberals. It is against Wikipedia's policies to add an entry to the list based on an editors interpretation of their political views. Also, there might be some controversy about having a section of liberals as part of a greater list of Democrats. There are some people who see Democrat and liberal as synonyms, but there are others who do not. Q0 15:29, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I don't think stating that a character has a number of liberal beliefs is sufficient. Instead, it should be specified which views the character has. Also, opposing the patriot act is not enough to make a fictional character a liberal. I think perhaps a better solution would be to have a list of fictional characters by position on political issues for things like this. Q0 23:54, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the section of liberals who are probably Democrats is appropriate for this list. In order to avoid violating Wikipedia's policy against original research (see WP:OR) it is necessary to only include people who have explicitly identified as Democrats or who have explicitly supported a Democratic candidate. Also, I'm not sure a list of liberals as part of a greater list of Democrats is appropriate, because different people have different opinions about how similar or different the meanings of these terms are. Removed section on liberals or Democratic viewpoints[edit]

I've removed the following section because I don't think it is acceptable given Wikipedia's policies. It is not explicitly straightforeward whether or not a particular viewpoint is a viewpoint of the United States Democratic Party. It therefore is likely a point of view or original research to include a character in the list based on the character having a Democratic viewpoint. In addition, it is bit controversial whether or not 'liberal' is equivalent to the Democratic party, so there are also problems with including a list of liberals in a greater list of Democrats.
