Years Column

A "when active" column would be really useful — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.143.213.144 (talk) 02:24, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

I have added the column and tallied all the seasons - uploading the changes over the next couple of days ColchesterSid (talk) 20:21, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

I will add all of those not already on later.--EchetusXe 16:23, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Article name

YesIknow I should have thought of this before, but if it's called List of footballers in England and Scotland by number of league appearances, it really ought to be presented in order of league appearances rather than alphabetically. As it stands, it's more of a List of footballers in England and Scotland with at least 500 appearances. Don't mind actually doing the re-ordering if people agree it needs doing... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:27, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm fine with it being ordered by number of appearances, will make it easier to put in people's articles "John Smith is currently 21st on the list of league appearances in England and Scotland", and to link to this article, as in the Stuart McCall article. Cheers, GiantSnowman 11:33, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
done. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 12:02, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
How about adding a 'Rank' column down the left hand side, i.e.:
Rank Name Nationality Games[1] Goals[2] Position Seasons[3] Clubs[4] Notes
1 Shilton, Peter  England 1005 1 GK 32 11
2 Ford, Tony  England 931 107 MF 26 8
3 Armstrong, Graeme  Scotland 910 77 DF 27 5

etc.

Could add ease to navigation. GiantSnowman 12:07, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Nice idea, but do you know how to do automatic row numbering in a wikitable? I don't. It'd need to work automatically, unless you think people will be prepared to manually renumber every line after the one they're adding... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 12:17, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
Oh yes, it would have to be automatic numbering. In an article, automatic numbering is got by using #, but that doesn't seem to work in this table...GiantSnowman 12:35, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Current players

How should players who have played 500+ games but still actively play be included (i.e. Ryan Giggs)? Should there be something to signify they are still playing? --Jimbo[online] 22:13, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Ideally, current players should be included, but there are obvious problems. As mentioned at WT:FOOTY, people will update players from their favourite team ignoring sources, accuracy, dates of last update, or whether the player's even taken the field for the game in question, just like they do in infoboxes. So the list would end up out of sync and terminally unverifiable. And with it being ordered by number of apps, there's an additional source of amusement, moving the player up the list...
There are ways round it:
  1. Leave them out until they've retired, which I believe to be the current approach.
  2. Someone takes it upon themselves to update every month or so with changes to the active players, and any changes between those regular updates get reverted on sight.
  3. Adopt the List of Bradford City A.F.C. players approach, whereby the active players have a table of their own. Though how you'd persuade people not to update until the cited source actually verified the updated figures is beyond me...
Personally, I'm drifting towards #3, the separate table, on the basis current players ought to be listed if they qualify, but keeping them separate would keep the main list stable. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:55, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
I'd back #3 too. It seems the most logical. --Jimbo[online] 08:07, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, number 3 is the best option - and I'm not just saying that because I'm the creator of the List of Bradford City A.F.C. players article! GiantSnowman 08:57, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Might it be worth adding a date column for the current players table, to indicate the last match included, e.g.
Name Nationality Games[1] Goals[2] Position Seasons[3] Clubs[4] Date of last match[5] Notes
Furlong, Paul  England 548 182 FW 19 9 4 September 2009 [6]
so we can see if we're up to date and synchronised with what the source in the Notes column says. Seeing as most of these will be sourced using the Soccerbase template, which doesn't have a date parameter. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:19, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Also Graham Alexander.--EchetusXe 13:42, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Syd Farrimond. 499 appearances! Alzarian16 (talk) 19:31, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

With 660 appearances, he should be there. Paolotacchi (talk) 18:49, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

He has not yet retired from professional footballer so is not (yet!) eligible. GiantSnowman 09:31, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
But the word "retired" isn't there in the name of the article: only in the incipit. We should fix the name or include Giggs. Paolotacchi (talk) 18:45, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
No need for either, what other lists have the specific inclusion criteria in the article name? Completely impractical. GiantSnowman 18:47, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Giggs announced retirement on 20th May 2014 on 963 games, and 2nd in the list behind Shilton. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.30.108.84 (talkcontribs)

I will add him. GiantSnowman 12:52, 20 May 2014 (UTC)
It seems he is still not in the list. Paolotacchi (talk) 22:19, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
