untitled[edit]

This article is in the category "executive branch of the U.S. government," but shouldn't be, because the U.S. and state governments are separate and each have separate executive branches. Paul 04:42, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The colonial Governors[edit]

I see now, the list is incomplete. The colonial governors haven't been added yet. GoodDay (talk) 16:18, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nor should they be. With all of the other state governor lists, they are in a separate article, the same system should be maintained here. And even if they were added, that wouldn't change the fact that the first state governor needs to be numbered 16th. --Golbez (talk) 16:22, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Note however, the name of the article. It's not List of State Governors of Connecticut. GoodDay (talk) 16:26, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There should probably be a continuity with the articles on the 12 other colonial states which set the colonial governors apart, because the colonial governors were very much different from the state governors, and the list of colonial governors can extend back a long time. On the other hand, we include territorial governors, but those usually are only for a few years, and at least that's after it became part of the country. Connecticut is simply unique in how it numbers things, and also the fact that it didn't draft a new constitution after independence. So in its one situation, there is a continuity of office, but it is a unique situation which I think gives way to the need to a standard set across the articles. --Golbez (talk) 16:31, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As that's how Conneticut does it, so be it. PS: What the situation at the List of Lieutenant Governors of Connecticut. -- GoodDay (talk) 16:25, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Don't know, have barely worked on Lt Gov lists. --Golbez (talk) 16:31, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Once I complete the Governors numbering, the LtGs are next. GoodDay (talk) 16:36, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You should know that Connecticut historians always include the colonial governors in a continuous list. Official Web sites for the State Library take this position, as do reference works and encyclopedias. The state's form of government didn't change during the Revolutionary era. In fact, this very article points out that the Colonial Charter remained in force until the 1810's, and this article's references include all colonial governors on the "list of governors." It's worth pointing out that Connecticut is unique among the states to follow this convention.

So if the historians follow that convention, and this article's own references do also, I'd humbly suggest that you're incorrect in excluding the colonial governors from the numbering system. I don't have a problem with a separate page for colonial governors, as people may be interested in them specifically, but they shouldn't be excluded from the numbering. --69.118.106.179 (talk) 20:18, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Date mismatch[edit]

The article does not explain why Jonathan Trumbull (16) and Matthew Griswold (17) are included in this list of post-accession governors when their terms start and end before Connecticut's date of accession (January 9, 1788). Was this done in error or is there some special reason why they are included? 94.175.75.132 (talk) 18:21, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Connecticut was admitted as a state on January 9, 1788, but it existed as a political unit beforehand. It wasn't created a state on January 9, 1788, rather an existing state joined the union on that date. From what I recall when working on these articles, most colonial states count their governors from independence rather than statehood. To ignore them would require a separate list of governors of Connecticut under the Articles of Confederation, and another list of governors of Connecticut between independence and statehood. As far as Connecticut is concerned, it was a single line of governors (and, uniquely to Connecticut, they trace that line all the way back to the creation of the colony, the only state that does so that I'm aware of) --Golbez (talk) 18:32, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Party affiliations[edit]

1. Why is Oliver Wolcott, Jr. colour-marked Democratic-Republican while he represents the Toleration Republican Party? 2. Why is Lowell P. Weicker, Jr. marked independent while he represents A Connecticut Party? --Синкретик (talk) 07:25, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

1. The Toleration Party was a Connecticut-only party that was, according to our article on it, "allied with the national [D-R] party", so I used the D-R coloring for it. If you think it should get a different color by all means suggest one, but I think the principle of least confusion leads us to this. Same reason I'd use the national Democratic color for the Minnesota DFL party, even though it's not a perfect analogue, it's strongly associated/allied with the national party. As for 2, hrm, yeah, not sure why. Don't think I did that, as I wouldn't have liked the color contrast between the gray at the top and the yellow, unkeyed color at the bottom. Fixed. --Golbez (talk) 09:25, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
