Proposed split[edit]

I propose we split this list apart into separate lists by genre. Thoughts? There are already existing lists for several genres, like List of jazz guitarists. I think it would make it easier to control and manage the lists. --Aguerriero (talk) 21:00, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Notability requirement[edit]

Blues guitarists[edit]

This list is plain wrong -- Lemon Jefferson died in 1929, so he's doing well to be post-1960s

Flamenco[edit]

I pasted some stuff in from the Flamenco guitar page. I don't know enough to know which links are spam and which aren't. Feel free to act appropriately.

Need More Definition of the "Folk" Category[edit]

First off, I'm not sure it even makes sense to try to categorize a lot of modern guitarists by "genre," considering how many of them play in multple genres and cross over regularly.

That said, it makes no sense to have people like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell in the same category with the likes of John Fahey, Bert Jansch, and Adrian Legg. Leaving aside the huge gulf in technique, to say that Dylan and Legg are the same genre is like putting Booket T. Jones and J.S.Bach into the same genre just because both happened to play the organ.

Can we say "alphabetize"?[edit]

I tend to agree that there's not a whole lot of point to a list like this, for at least two reasons: 1) there are already several separate "genre" lists, and 2) it is difficult -- if not impossible -- to categorize cross-over players by genre. The list of "blues" players, for example, seems to include a lot of players who certainly have played the blues now and then, but who were not primarily known as blues players.

I'd propose eliminating this list altogether, and just having the separate genre lists. That way, cross-over players could be placed on as many lists as appropriate, and avoid the confusion of having a huge single list in which they are listed multiple times.

Whichever way it goes, PLEASE alphabetize any names you add to the list(s). Without doing that, the lists become more obfuscatory than helpful. TIA.
