Listing of bridges not yet completed

[edit]

This list currently includes bridges that are under construction or otherwise not yet completed. This does not follow along with what has been done on other bridge superlative lists (see List of longest suspension bridge spans as an example). - ¢Spender1983 (talk) 05:38, 28 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Gorge Bridge - Height

[edit]

This article lists the Royal Gorge Bridge's height as 955 ft (291 m), yet all other references I've seen (including Wikipedia references such as the main Royal Gorge Bridge article and the List of tallest bridges in the world) list the deck height as 321 m (1053 ft). Was the different value in this article intentional? If so, on what is it based? Larry (talk) 02:47, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I wondered about this too as the Royal Gorge park website and an on-site plaque both quote 1053'. Went there today. Scary. Mr Larrington (talk) 00:48, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Removing items

[edit]

I'm removing a few bridges as the list is quite long and get less accurate at smaller heights. ShakyIsles (talk) 00:08, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Second cut added.--Glabb (talk) 08:26, 23 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Centralized page move discussion

[edit]

There is a centralized discussion about whether or not to remove "in the world" from this and roughly fifteen other articles.

Update

[edit]

Hello everyone, this is a proposal for an update of this list. The current version is outdated and has too many errors. The reference, Highestbridges.com has been modified a lot whereas the wikipedia's list not. Now it's only a proposal but if most of main contributors are agree, I will update it.

User:Glabb/List of highest bridges

  • This version is made with Excel (xls or ods) so I can do any changes fastly without modifying every entries. This is the reason why each entries is encoded on one line whereas the original is one line by case. The code is more complicated but this is very, very more convenient to modify and update. Maybe I can put my .ods file on Wiki (in the talk page) for everyone who want to update it (but I don't know how to do it).
  • So I didn't put units in each case (ex: 565 m (1,854 ft)) but it can be done easily and I'm going to do it but just a remark, it's not very readable with low resolution to write meters and feets, it would be better if we can change units (meters to feet) by just ticking a box...(I don't know how to do it too!)
  • I think there is no need to write "highest bridge of ..." because we can guess all these caracteristics in the table, it's more readeable. If we want, each bridge can have a record "the highest red bridge in the world with yellow suspension...".
  • The ranking is continue, if bridges have the same height, the first opened is the first on the table. I don't think the ranking in the list (8, 9, 9=, 11 ...) matches Wikipedia's standarts.
  • I remove "design column", it's obvious on each photography and there are only 4 or 5 different kind of bridges in this list.
  • I put only one note about dams because a big part of all these bridges are high due to dam construction. We don't need to detail all dams here but in each article, it would be clearer.
  • I know that here there're about 180 entries, I put 170 meters the minimum to be on the list (for me it's not a problem !). Maybe the correct minimum to be reasonable would be 200 meters ... there're more than 500 entries on Highestbridges!
  • I didn't put footbridges and pipelines bridges because there's a main difference between monkey bridges and 6 lanes highway bridges, also, there're many temporary footbridges constructed in China next to new high bridges, should we include all of them? I've got a table of all footbridges/pipelines bridges, I can do another table if somebody wants.
  • Most of heights are measured by Eric Sakowski's laser rangefinder, official heights (especially heights of Chinese plans!) are very different on every documents, maybe it would be interesting to describe this in the introduction, there was no official ranking like this list before Highestbridges.com did it. Even for span lenghts, maybe some 198m span bridges are officialy 200m span but it's an approximating.
  • I think "Timeline" doesn't need photos, it's a secondary list and some photos are already in the first list. Also, there is no proof of these facts, it's a study done by wikipedian contributors and maybe some not well known bridges are absent or heights aren't enought detailed ...--Glabb (talk) 21:14, 8 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Great that you want to update and improve this list. However there some problems with your suggestions. My comments are:
  • Design column is important. It is not clear from photos (if there is a photo) what type of bridge it is and this assumes people know how to recognise what type of bridge it is anyway.
  • The website Highestbridges.com is a wiki and therefore is not a reliable source. Although it is used as a source in this list any information stated on that website should be supported by other sources.
  • I agree list should be shortened 200m seems like a good cut off point
  • Units are very important and should be both metres and feet
If the timeline is original research then it has not place in a Wikipedia list

My comments:
  • long-term solution is Wikidata (and Listeria)
  • agree with remove "highest bridge of ..."
  • there is no standard on the ranking, but it is important to indicate ties
  • keep design column
  • agree that reasonable length is important (easier to keep list up-to date), 200 m minimum is acceptable
  • agree with removal of footbridges and pipeline bridges
  • agree with Highestbridges.com as main source, i consider it as "self-published material with author as established expert whose work in the relevant field has been published by reliable third-party publications" (see [1]) per Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources#Exceptions
  • timeline - above listed book has section about Historical Development

So I do an update of my user list with design column, meters and feet. I include rivers in design column and another table with footbridges/pipelines bridges (there are only 5 entries). This list will be shortened to 200 meters high and the rest of the table will be in talk page (with the table of 175 to 150 meters high bridges).
Of course Wikidata is a long-term solution but now Wikidata lists doesn't work and I don't think I can put entries like "Q1234" here. However I think too that automatic lists like Listeria will be perfect for this kind of list and to transfert it in all languages (the most complicated part will be the table code).
I checked all edits until 20 january on main list and on Highestbridges.com. The timeline isn't updated, we need to change sources.
I think everything is good to transfert this soon to the main article.
