Canoids, including several dog breeds, were already indigidous to North America. In fact, North America is where they started, then spread throughout the world. Between-continent invasives only? Or within-continent invasives, too?[edit]

I'm confused by what constitutes an "invasive species in North America". Does this list only include those species not native to any part of North America and which came exclusively from other continents? Or does it also include those species which are native to some parts of North America, but which eventually became invasive in other parts of North America where they are not native?

For example, does a plant that is found naturally in Wisconsin but becomes invasive in Mexico belong on this list? Many organisms, especially plants, are considered "invasive species" even if their native area is just a different sub-region of the same continent. In other words, should this list be limited to species which invaded North America from Europe/Asia/Africa/Australia/South America, or should it also include species which invaded distinct regions of North America from their native homes in other regions of North America? Raccoons[edit]
