Splitting proposal

[edit]
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of this discussion was to split to List of killings by law enforcement officers in pre-reunification Germany and List of killings by law enforcement officers in post-reunification Germany, with no prejudice against a further discussion to further split the pre-reunification article. --Ahecht (TALK

This had been discussed a bit in edit summaries, but I wanted to open an actual discussion. This article is currently the 4th longest on Wikipedia, and two of the three pages longer than it are currently having their own split discussions. Not only is this article so long that many web browsers are having difficulty displaying it (especially when trying to edit it), but it keeps exceeding the post-expand include size limit despite my best efforts to reduce the template load.

I propose splitting this article into List of killings by law enforcement officers in pre-reunification Germany and List of killings by law enforcement officers in post-reunification Germany, as it not only seems politically like a good place to divide the article, but is roughly half-way through the list.

At least 3/4 of the text on this page was added by IP addresses starting with 62.216.215, which I cannot easily send notifications to (I'll leave a talk page message for the most recent IP), but I'm pinging the remaining significant contributors and frequent editors listed here: DoubtfulPriority, Celevra089, Cstapff, Mujinga, Janschejbal, AngryHarpy, Arjayay, Thats Just Great, and Narky Blert. --Ahecht (TALK

  • I think I've only gnomed this article, fixing links to DAB pages. That said, I agree with OP - WP:SIZE matters.
I assume the article relates only to the BRD. If not, it should. Pre-1945 Germany and the former DDR are very different topics.
I agree with OP's proposal. If necessary, I would support further subdivision (perhaps by decade) to reduce size further. Narky Blert (talk) 15:35, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Narky Blert The article goes back to the 1920s. There could certainly be an argument made to split the pre-unification article further into "German Reich", "East Germany", and "West Germany" articles, but splitting at re-unification is a good first step. --Ahecht (TALK

I would support splitting the pre-1945 material into Weimar Republic and Third Reich - but your original proposal is a good start. One step at a time. Narky Blert (talk) 17:41, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. I'd opt for decade-by-decade splitting, but if that proves too extreme, the four-way proposal (Weimar/Riech/East/West) for pre-unification articles seems the wisest move. Mia a data witch!  talk · contribs 20:08, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Pretty much in agreement with @Narky Blert. I was unsure if splitting the article into more than two pages would be excessive seeing as Weimar, NS Germany, GDR and pre-80s West Germany have considerably less available data on police killings. The bloat of the article is unfortunately concentrated to post-unification BRD so it would still be imbalanced in terms of size, but I don't know whether again splitting the section up into 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s is reasonable either. 62.216.215.63 (talk) 15:30, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
