Untitled[edit]

"There are over 260 species of carnivorans, the majority of which feed primarily on meat. "

Are there really 260 species of carnivorans in Cyprus? Or does this number refer to carnivorans in general (NOT in Cyprus)?

I think the latter is the case.

The same goes for "There are about 220 artiodactyl species".

Someone please confirm before I edit the article.

These lines are the same for all "list of mammals of <Country>" pages. They are about the total number of species, not just the ones in Cyprus. - FakirNL (talk) 10:59, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wild goats[edit]

Goats are listed in various sources, including [1] (not searchable, first paragraph of introduction): "Capra aegarus is known to be distributed in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Lebanon, Russia, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, India, Ira, Italy, Amman, Pakistan, Slovakia, Syria, and Turkmenistan (Shackleton, 1997)".--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 15:59, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That article is from 2009. The IUCN's wild goat assessment is from 2020 and does not feature Cyprus on its list of countries. Refer to the quote of my last edit summary. J0ngM0ng (talk) 16:04, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
User:J0ngM0ng, your first edit summary was patently false (as the document listed Cyprus). Your current reversion is also without merit, even if these are feral goats (Capra hircus, themselves closely related to the wild form) they are still mammals that are present on the island. If this list is to be limited to wild, non-invasive, species according to the IUCN, then the article should be retitled. Other "list of mammals" articles include introduced species, e.g.: List of mammals of South Australia has Camelus dromedarius (introduced in 1840, much later than goats on Cyprus). I will also state that the current lead stating "There are seventeen mammal species in Cyprus" according to the IUCN is at odds with this 2017 IUCN document stating 25 species of mammals.--Eostrix  (🦉 hoot hoot🦉) 16:33, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The article shall not be retitled, and it is customary to not include feral populations of domestic animals in these lists. Otherwise almost every country would have feral dogs, cats, etc. The goats on Cyprus are not wild goats and are feral populations of C. hircus. End of discussion. Additionally, if you think the leading sentence is incorrect, then change it yourself so that it is correct. J0ngM0ng (talk) 17:36, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
