List size

Why does this list only go to 1350? Has no one bothered to do the other 650 yet? Or do they not exist for some strange reason? -67.166.64.98 at 06:34, 2 October 2004

Overlinking by transcluding pages

17-Jan-2008: The article "List of asteroids/1001–2000" generates that list of 1,000 asteroids by transcluding 10 sub-pages of 100 asteroids each. The 4,402 wikilinks on the 10 sub-pages are duplicated to become another 4,402 wikilinks when transcluding into the overall article of 1001-2000. The Wikipedia page-link databases then contain thousands of page-links showing "List of asteroids/1001–2000" everywhere the 10 sub-pages are linked. The overlinking includes the links to each astronomer, such as Sergei Ivanovich Beljawsky, with links both to 100s and to 1000s:

This is just part of a widespread duplication problem because, currently, each of 173 lists of 1000 asteroids transcludes the 10 sub-articles of 100, such as:

From what I've seen of overlinking, the Wikipedia page-link databases must double-link all internal wikilinks to the 11 pages, linking "What links here" to each of the 10 sub-pages of 100 asteroids, then linking all again to the overall page of 1000 asteroids in that same numeric range: the effect generates more than 173,000 * 3 wikilinks per asteroid * 2 sets of repetition = twice massive (1,038,000), or over 1 million wikilinks, rather than 519,000 wikilinks to date/name each asteroid. I don't think Wikipedia has any feature to suppress those wikilinks. Transcluding the sub-pages has duplicated the total wikilinks. I am experimenting with a user-space copy of 1,000 asteroids to examine the performance issues. -Wikid77 (talk) 13:12, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Year links NOT needed for date-format

20-Jan-2008: The article "List of asteroids/1001–2000" generates 1,000 sets of date/year links. Linking of every date, even when repeated, allows the selection of date-format preference; however, the year does not need to be linked: even if a registered user clicks "my preferences" to set date-format as ISO yyyy-mm-dd, the complete date can be reformatted by wikilinking just the month/day portion while leaving the year as plain text. In the case of the 173 articles of thousand-asteroid lists, each 1,000 year fields can be unlinked to reduce wikilinks overall by 173,000, or 2*173,000=346,000 fewer year links across both the 100s and 1000s asteroid lists. -Wikid77 (talk) 06:17, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
