Drepanodon

[edit]

The name Drepanodon Nesti 1826 actually refers to a genus of fossil bear from Italy (Nesti 1826). The species Drepanodon impar was originally assigned to Drepanodon by Leidy (1856) because its holotype was mistakenly thought to come from Miocene and Drepanodon was erroneously considered a senior synonym of Machairodus by Leidy at the time. Leidy (1861) later erected Lesticodus for Drepanodon impar. Therefore, Drepanodon should not be included in any lists of mosasaur genera.
