Map idea[edit]

Could the maps be included in the same column as the name of the municipality. Dincher 12:35, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Maybe - I had also thought combining "named for" "remarks" and making it "named for, villages" or even "named for, remarks / villages" as most of the entries do not have remarks and some of the current remarks are a stretch (much as I love Cohick's...). Or perhaps the reamining valid remarks could be letter footnotes and not in the table? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:24, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Some of the remarks I added were strictly tounge in cheek when I initially wrote them, perhaps some are still left, like the Cohick's one. I think that named for, villages etc., could all go under the simple title of "remarks" this should give us something to say about all of them. Dincher 14:54, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • OK, I will work on that then - I was waiting to add villages until we decided. Last time I drove past, Cohick's had a for sale sign in the window. Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:37, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
        • If I only had the money. I'll take a look at the updates. Dincher 02:49, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nippenose Twp.[edit]

Our references state that Nippenose Township was formed from Bald Eagle and Upper Bald Eagle Twps. Are these townships the same as what is now Bald Eagle Township and Spring Township? Or is Upper Bald Eagle still in existence? Dincher 00:34, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please see below - I think Nippenose might have gotten land from BE first, then more land from Upper BE (maybe when BE was split into Lower and Upper? or when Upper BE became part of Clinton Co?). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:14, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bald Eagle Twp.[edit]

The wording "partially" is throwing me off in the comments about the Bald Eagle Townships. Could it be reworded? Perhaps Spring Township -comment - Was once Bald Eagle Township until the name was changed for whatever reason in whatever year. And for Bald Eagle Township - was once much larger than it is today now part of Clinton County. Dincher 00:44, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the confusion - Meginnes talks about Bald Eagle Township as one of the seven original Twps in Lycoming County. He also refers to a Lower Bald Eagle Township which became part of Centre County (and survives as Spring Twp there, after the name change), but I am not sure if "Lower" is an official part of the name or just a desctiptive adjective (the online version of Meginnes has lots of OCR typos and I am not sure without checking a print copy at a library). Finally, there is a Bald Eagle Twp in Clinton County that was originally incorporated as a part of Lycoming County.
So here's what I think happened - originally there is Bald Eagle Twp in Lycoming County. The lower part of it becomes a big chunk Center County, and there is a surviving Spring Twp (that was once called Bald Eagle Twp) there today. I think that before Centre County was formed, Bald Eagle Twp was split into Lower and Upper, and Centre County is formed from "Lower Bald Eagle Twp". In any case, the part left in Lycoming County is partly taken for Nippenose Twp (as Upper Bald Eagle Twp and Bald Eagle Twp) and the rest becomes part of Clinton County when that is split off (with a surviving Bald Eagle Twp there too). I am going to add some of this to the article itself - I need to find a history of Centre and of Clinton Counties. Does this make sense?
As long as we are on former Twps, Pine Creek Twp was another original Lycoming Co Twp and survives as the same name in Clinton Co. Plus Meginness refers to a Potter Twp - I can not find any more about this in Meginness, but I think it became part of Potter Co (like Tioga Twp and Tioga Co). Plus I still need to sort through the Sullivan Co. twps - Hillsgrove (was Plunketts Creek) and Shrewsbury were split off the Lycoming Co Twps of the same name. Davidson was its own. Need to check on the others. Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:11, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me. Dincher 01:22, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The revisions to the Bald Eagles are excellent. They clear up the murkiness. Dincher 01:40, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I think it is ready for PR. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:37, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
After a lot of digging and reading I have most of it sorted out. See Note A in the article. I still need to add some refs to it and in the process I found more townships in Clinton Co (originally it had 12 twps, 3 from Centre, 9 from Lycoming) that I need to add too. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:06, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent work! Dincher 22:41, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - excellent work on your own finding the last missing settled dates. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:05, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Picture Rocks[edit]

I have looked in numerous sources and cannot find the "formed from" info for Picture Rocks. Perhaps this can be found locally in a real book at a library or courthouse. Dincher 21:04, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I will see what I can find out when I am next near a library that might have that information - the map is not much help as Picture Rocks is at the junction of three townships all formed from Muncy Twp, Shrewsbury (formed 1804), Penn (formed 1828), and Wolf (formed 1834). I had thought the dates might help, but Picture Rocks was formed after all three in 1857. From the twp boundary lines, if I had to guess I would say it was formed from Penn and Wolf as the border of Wolf is a straight line there otherwise and Penn is south of Muncy Creek (Shrewsbury is north of the creek). OK, enough speculation - it may take me a while but I will check into it. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:58, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • No worries. I was speculating too much along the same lines as yours, by speculating won't get you far, especially when the facts are out there, somewhere. Dincher 00:03, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • Found it! In Meginness, Chapter 38 under Wolf Township: "Since its erection Wolf has contributed territory to form two boroughs - Hughesville and Picture Rocks." No mention is made of Shrewsbury or Penn giving any territory to form anything else. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:45, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
        • Great! I would've never thought to look under the possible sources. Good work! Dincher 00:47, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Missing Former Townships[edit]

Since I found more townships recently, I started wondering about missing former townships. First off I think that as of now Centre, Clinton, Sullivan, and Union are complete. I also just found a link that McKean had only the one twp (Ceres) when formed [1], so it is complete too. That leaves nine counties formed at least partially directly from Lycoming: Armstrong, Bradford, Clearfield, Indiana, Jefferson, Potter, Tioga, Venango, and Warren. My assumption is that each county initially had at least part of a township from Lycoming County, so that would mean there are still several "missing" former townships. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:35, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would assume the same. But where would we find the documentation? Dincher 00:43, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So far I have searched "History X County Pennsylvania" on the web and found material, though it is lots of work / looking. So far I have found the History of Centre and Clinton Counties (one book) at Penn State, and on the internet I've found transcripts of the books History of Northumberland County, History of Sullivan County, and Meginness' History of Lycoming County History, plus the McKean info above. Meginness mentions court costs in 1810 for Dunstable, Pine (Creek), Wayne and Bald Eagle Twps (all Clinton) plus Athens (PHMC says from Luzerne), Burlington and Ulster Twps in Bradford Co., so that's a possibility to look into (Bradford). Not easy, and I need to add one more Clinton twp and some refs. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:16, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Found an index of all such histories for PA counties on the web here. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:20, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have a print copy of Godcharles' 1933 Pennsylvania book, which lists all PA municipalities and was used by the PHMC as a ref. I updated the Lycoming Co list just now. Unfortunately it does not list former twps and does not always give what a twp from another county what was formed from, so that is a bust (it does list the original twps, so that is useful). It does give days and months for date founded in almost all cases, but I think year alone is OK for now - maybe I will add this data to the articles themselves. I also think there are enough formed froms now to add them back to the former twps - not all, but over half. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:50, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Municipalities from the US Census[edit]

I am checking the US Census for Townships. Starting with the info listed here by census.

  • 1790 - Lycoming County was still part of Northumberland County. Populations was not listed by twp. See this
  • 1800 - Not on the web that I can see here
  • 1810 - Also not on the web here
  • 1820 - Finally have a listing by twps, see here on page 74 of 151.
    • Municipalities listed are: Brown, Bald Eagle, Chapman, Dunstable, Mifflin, Nippenose, Pine Creek, Wayne (all twps), Williamsport boro, and more twps Washington, Muncy Creek, Muncy, Loyalsock, Lycoming, Moreland, Elkland, and Shrewsbury.
  • 1830 - only abstract with county total population here
  • 1840 - only county pop stats here
  • 1850 - Listing by twp / boro here on page 22 of 53. No info on changes, checked Sullivan County no info that it is new.

Pictures[edit]

I think it's time to update the pictures here. I note that we have two of Cummings Township. I don't think any new pictures have been addes since the list became FL. Dincher (talk) 01:07, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - I like the new Nicholas T pic of Waterville on Flickr. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:19, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I should have time tomorrow night to make some changes. Feel free to jump ahead if you wish. Dincher (talk) 01:40, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I am trying to keep an eye on Leonard Harrison vandalism and changes in the article in the Dispatch that I wrote with Finetooth that just came out. Do we want to try for a fully illustrated list? I could work on getting more photos. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:47, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I checked and there are images for most of the municipalities. Still need eight of fifty two: Lycoming, McIntyre, Mill Creek, Penn, Pine, Shrewsbury, Watson, and Wolf Townships. Plus the photo of Cascade Twp is of it and McNett (Pleasant Stream is the border between them). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:28, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What's the article in the Dispatch? Not really sure what the Dispatch is, I assume it's on here. Sounds like a plan for getting the fully illustrated list. Should be easy enough to do. We could get the Sullivan County list fully illustrated too. Dincher (talk) 02:37, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Dispatch article is here. The Sullivan County list has pix for 11 of 13 municipalities and would be fairly easy too. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:58, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I will hold off on adding pictures to the lists unitl we have pictures for all the municipalities. No hurry and we can look on flickr too. Dincher (talk) 21:12, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

5 years later[edit]

I just added another Nicholas T picture to one of the townships, Wolf, there are just a handful left to photograph. I hope to be up there next summer and want to get a few more. But if anybody has any more to add, please do. Gerry D (talk) 23:29, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
