"Gaulle is also homophonic with the French word "gaule", the long pole that is used to harvest walnuts. This French word can also be understood in slang as meaning "dumb"."

"now"?

Article talks about "now" and "nowadays" several times.

Then it becomes important to know when the article was written. Better would be to say "now, X years after de Gaulle's death" or simply "in the 2010s" (or similar). Then the distance in time from de Gaulle's heyday until the writer's "now" becomes clear.
