Alphabetize[edit]

It would be nice if this was alphabetized. I wish I could do it, but I'm not that familiar with how to fix and sort this. Stevenwhig (talk) 20:10, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Content[edit]

The intro to this list basically sounds like it is a list of people from the Akron metropolitan area rather than just Akron, Ohio. Either the title should be changed to reflect that (like List of people from the Akron metropolitan area or List of people from Greater Akron) or the list should be edited to include only people who lived in and/or were born in the city of Akron. --JonRidinger (talk) 13:24, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree on this. Other communities in the metro Akron area get lists of who was from their town, but now Akron has no list of its own because this was expanded to include the whole area. I vote for pruning the list back to include just Akron. While Portage County is technically greater Akron, I don't think people from Mantua or Windham, or even Twinsburg in Summit County, think of themselves as from Greater Akron. --Beirne (talk) 02:35, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This list of people in the main article has had people added, so maybe that list should be the one for the city of Akron. That then leaves the issue of what to do with this list. It falls somewhere between people from Akron and people from Greater Cleveland. I'm inclined to have this list deleted since a list of people from Summit and Portage counties isn't really that interesting. --Beirne (talk) 18:09, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What list in the main article are you referring to? The only thing there is a paragraph that highlights some of the most notable people from Akron. I think what needs to happen here is removal of people who aren't from Akron itself and changing the intro to reflect that. Even the paragraph on Akron, Ohio could probably be edited as well. Many of the people it highlights were merely born in Akron but grew up elsewhere (like Hugh Downs and Thurmon Munson). The list could also benefit from being categorized or organized in some way beyond alphabetical. --JonRidinger (talk) 20:16, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's the list I was referring to. While some of the people are just barely from Akron, like the ones you mentioned, as well as John Lithgow, it covers a lot the main ones. What we can maybe do is turn this article into a list just of people from Akron, see how small the list gets, then decide. --Beirne (talk) 02:39, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The more I look into it, the more it looks like each name should be reviewed individually for the paragraph (highlighting people who were more than just born in Akron and grew up elsewhere but actually lived in Akron longer than a few days/hours after they were born) and this list just needs to be trimmed down to people who were born in or lived in Akron, not the Akron area. Once that is done, then yes, I agree that's when we should make a better decision about this list, which only recently survived its own deletion debate. --JonRidinger (talk) 04:11, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. The criteria from the WP:USCITY says "Provide information, preferably in prose form, of any famous or notable individuals that were born in, or have lived for a significant amount of time, in the city." So people like Hugh Downs and Thurmon Munson should be included, as well as the Mothersbaugh's. People like Clark Gable or John Lithgow, who just passed through, will be tougher to decide. <---Those people can be included, but in a paragraph summarizing the most notable people pointing to the larger list, I'd personally lean towards those who were in Akron longer than just their birth (Thurmon Munson and Hugh Downs were two examples).
