Is Tanuja & Nutan from West Bengal? --UB 05:06, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No they aren't. Tanuja was married to Shomu Mukherjee, and Nutan was her sister. Indranee 23:48, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also, Jagadish Chandra Bose should be included in the "Scientists" section. Please check this and other sites on him: http://web.mit.edu/varun_ag/www/bose.html

I did add/include him but someone deleted him. I would like to know why. thanks! Indranee 23:48, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Simply because this article lists people from *West Bengal*, and Jagadish Chandra Bose was from *East Bengal*. Quoting from Jagdish Chandra Bose
'Bose was born in Mymensingh in Bengal (now in Bangladesh) on November 30, 1858. His father, Bhagawan Chandra Bose worked as a tax collector for the British East India Company. His family originally hailed from the village Rarikhal, Bikrampur, in the current day Dhaka District of Bangladesh.
Therefore, I have removed Bose. Thanks. --Ragib 00:04, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

by that criteria, almost half the people on that list should be excluded. I think we're treading on fine ground here if we exclude BENGALIS from either list. if they are Bengalis and lived and worked in the [Pre-Independence] Province of Bengal, IMO they should be in both lists -- Bangladesh and West Bengal. Indranee 01:03, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

also, by that criteria, there is no logic in including Jhumpa Lahiri in the "West Bengal" list. she was not born in India/West Bengal, neither did she grow up there. so if you include JL in it, you need to include JCB. Indranee 01:04, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I had placed the same argument in Talk:Rabindranath Tagore, but an overwhelming consensus was that birthplace is the main criteria. (see the discussion about categories there ... I was specifically told by the majority that birthplace is the sole and foremost criterion, that a person has lived a significant part of life is secondary, as happened with Tagore and East Bengal).
Specially for this article, it says List of people from West Bengal. I've cleaned up the Freedom fighters section which contained people from East Bengal by mistake. The current people listed in this page are born in West Bengal. If someone is not, that person is not supposed to be in this particular page. I suggest you create a List of Bengalis page, which can contain all Bengali people. I also suggest removing Jhumpa Lahiri ... she is not even born in India. She is definitely a Bengali, but list of people from X can only include people actually "from" X. --Ragib 01:16, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

okay, I understand your situation now. will go look at that other page where the discussion took place. it's not just JL though, there are a ton of other names on this page of people who were not born even in Bengal, like Anita Desai et al. I guess it's a work in progress, though I still think it's a bit of "chul-chera bichaar" ;) as to the birthplace, especially if the person was a bengali, was born in pre-independence PROVINCE of Bengal, and lived and worked therein. as to Jhumpa Lahiri, I suspect people want to include her because of the pulitzer fame ('cos hey it looks good for the list!) but by that criteria (birthplace), she shouldn't be included. thanks for the discussion. have a nice night. :) Indranee 01:26, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed Anita Desai (not sure about Kiran Desai's birthplace), and Baichung Bhutia. still investigating some of the others. but I still have doubts about this criteria. thanks. Indranee 01:32, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

questions?

[edit]

Please justify why the following people are listed in this article:

  • Upamanyu Chatterjee, born in 1959, at Patna, Bihar.
  • Kishore Kumar was born in a Bengali family as Abhas Kumar Ganguly, in the small town of Khandwa of Madhya Pradesh.
  • Rohan Gavaskar(born February 20, 1976 in Uttar Pradesh) is a cricket player and the son of former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar. He is a specialist middle-order left-handed batsman and a part-time left-arm-orthodox spin bowler.
  • Saba Karim(born November 14, 1967 in Patna) is an Indian cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a wicketkeeper.

I think the scope of the article doesn't allow people not "from" west bengal to be included. Thanks. --Ragib 05:46, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jagadish chandra Bose studied and worked from Calcutta.. hence he should be included. [Sourav] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.163.216.217 (talk) 16:13, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I request Chakrarana (talk · contribs) to stop cut pasting a list of Bengali poets and artists into the article, without ever verifying whether the persons are actually from West Bengal. For example, it doesn't take more than a few seconds to check where Taslima Nasrin is from. Similarly, Ritwik Ghatak, Utpal Dutt, Nabinchandra Sen were all East Bengalis. Please don't add incorrect information repeatedly. Thanks. --Ragib 21:38, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Who is a bengali? e.g. Dia Mirza??

[edit]

Don't you guys think more important is the language than the birthplace? If someone can't speak read or write Bengali, even then only on the basis of birthplace or bloodline can someone be considered as Bengali? I think this two critera should come into effect only when we are not sure if the person in context doesn't know "Bangla". Just a suggestion! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Debapriyo (talkcontribs) 08:34, 14 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

What about Sir P C Roy?

Check here GDibyendu (talk) 18:39, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Khulna is in Bangladesh, and was in erstwhile East Bengal ... NOT West Bengal. --Ragib (talk) 18:43, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tibbetibaba

[edit]

You can include the name of Tibbetibaba in the section 'Religion' of your article. Tibbetibaba was a famous Bengali saint of India whose life was based on both Advaita Vedanta teachings and Mahayana principles.

There is an article on Tibbetibaba in Wikipedia. --Badshah165 (talk) 04:54, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article focus

[edit]

This is a list of people from a specific geographic region -- the Indian state of West Bengal. It is therefore quite incorrect to include people here who were not born in the geographic area under the region. I would request editors to refrain from including people from East Bengal in this list. There is a separate list List of Bengalis what covers all Bengali people. --Bagh71 (talk) 19:24, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I request the anon IP from Tamil Nadu to refrain from adding people from East Bengal in this list. There is a separate list List of Bengalis for people of BEngali origin. *This list* is for people born in a very precisely defined geographic region -- the current area under West Bengal. Naturally, people from East Bengal are not appropriate for this list, no matter how famous they are. --Bagh71 (talk) 19:29, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that the anon IP (now signed in as User:Saranya Saha) is ignoring any such messages. I am going to put the matter to the notice of administrators. Please read the above message and STOP adding unrelated people. --Bagh71 (talk) 19:34, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I regret to find that a large number of people were included here who had only minimal link with West Bengal. Please stop for a moment ... this is a list of people "from" West Bengal. An American professor doesn't become "from WEst Bengal" just because he's interested in the culture. The worst example was Max Mueller, who probably didn't even set foot there!! Also included in this list are many people from East Bengal. Please DO NOT include them here. There is a separate list for Bengali people, as mentioned many times above. *This page* is for people *from* West Bengal. Keep it that way. Don't include wrong information. --Bagh71 (talk) 07:52, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

names of great teachers

[edit]

names of great teachers may be added in this list Arunsnanda (talk) 05:56, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

list of magicians

[edit]

there are many famous magicians in west bengal who have enriched the sphere of performing art and highlited the fame of India in the court of the world. their names may be added here. Arunsnanda (talk) 05:53, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

Last time I visited this page, there were dozens of barely notable personalities (eg. some present day doctors), turning this page into an ad campaign. Thanks for the trim. We have to keep trimming these frivolous additions. Sarindam7 09:53, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Cleanup

[edit]

I have begun the first step of cleaning up this list. I removed all of the non-notable people--that is, the people without Wikipedia articles. Lists of this type are generally considered to be a navigational aid, and thus should only have people with their own articles. However, if people disagree, it can be possible to have people without articles, but only if 1) we can find sources that unambiguously state they are/were from West Bengal and 2) that they are important enough that the could be included in the West Bengal article in prose. If we do not have such sources, they cannot be on this list.

The next step is a significant reorganization. It doesn't make sense to have, for example, a separate linguistics section from the science section. Additionally, we can't have sections entitled "Founding Fathers"; it's both sexist and a value judgment, and as such, violates WP:NPOV. We need to disperse everyone in what I now called "women's rights" into other categories; for example, if the woman is famous as a physician, she should be in the physician category. Gender segregation is so last century.

The last step is that we do need to go into each linked article and make sure the person is explicitly listed as being West Bengali, and there needs to be a source to verify that. That's a big pain in the you know what, so I don't know if I'll ever get that far. Qwyrxian (talk) 14:46, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
