Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on January 7, 2008.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ...that only 42 players have scored five or more goals in an NHL game since the league started in 1917?

Tidbit about Peter Bondra[edit]

I am almost certain that Peter Bondra's five-goal game was special because four of the goals occurred within two minutes of one another in the second period of that game - a stupendous feat that will never be repeated. It's not mentioned in Bondra's own article, and I'm too tired to look for a source. Shalom (HelloPeace) 06:32, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've searched this over, but I've found no reliable mention of this... I'll keep searching for this, as it's very interesting tidbit. --Maxim(talk) 03:07, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gaborik photo[edit]

So I went to my first NHL game ever (as a guest) last December and it happened to be the game where Gaborik scored 5 goals. I was able to snap a picture from the club seats right after the game so I've added it here, I hope this photo passes muster (because I was higher up it's been cropped and it wasn't as clear as I would've liked). --Bobak (talk) 00:40, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lucky you. :-) Unfortunately, I don't think this image fits in - it's low-quality compared to the others, and the other five players pictured are much more important, IMHO. Joe Malone scored seven, Lalonde was the first to score six, Richard is a Québecois hero, Gretzky is Greztky (:-p), and Lemieux score 5 goals five different ways. Also, the picture is one too many; I was thinking of removing Lemieux when first editing it, but decided against as it complemented the refs well. Maxim(talk) 03:12, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Like Maxim said, there are already too many images since they break in to the next section. To go further; The image does not really fit in with the others since you can't see Gaborik as clear as the other players with 'portrait images'. Maybe it would fit better as a lead image? --Krm500 (talk) 04:18, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've added it to the lead; it looks better than in the previous position, but I'm still not 100% sold on its inclusion, per the quality concerns (we don't see Gaborik well). Maxim(talk) 14:49, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I can see if I can do something about it in PS. --Krm500 (talk) 17:26, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I cropped the image, sharpened Gaborik, and reduced the brightness on the ice giving it some texture. Is it better? --Krm500 (talk) 17:55, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, a bit better. Maxim(talk) 23:52, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What about playoffs???[edit]

Why are playoff games not included on this page? This list is only identified as five goals in "NHL games." And I think a playoff game certainly meets that criteria. Specifically, I'm thinking of Lemieux's five goal game in Pittsburgh against the Flyers on 4/25/89. It seems a bit a silly to exclude such feats... especially since they come against tougher competition almost by definition. -Sam 71.178.70.113 (talk) 20:36, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Playoffs are included, but the sources say nothing about this. Do you have a source for it? --Krm500 (talk) 22:57, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the story from the NY Times about Lemieux's game (which also references five goal playoff games by Leach , Richard, and Sittler that are not on this list) http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=950DE3DB133DF934A15757C0A96F948260 -Sam72.73.50.2 (talk) 23:20, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you're going to add playoff games, you've gotta include everything. Maurice Richard's five goal playoff game isn't here. And I don't know about others. Surely Gretzky had a couple. Maybe Bossy as well? Maxim(talk) 23:31, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

dude... I was in the middle of adding them (btw, Gretzky never did it) -Sam 72.73.50.2 (talk) 23:47, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You hadn't edited in a while. Do you have the sources? I want to add them. Maxim(talk) 23:53, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
the NY Times article above references the fact that Lemieux's April '89 five goal game tied the playoff record held by Richard, Leach, and Sittler. From there, I simply googled each name along with the phrase five goal game or five goal playoff game to find those dates. I also updated the numbers associated with the pictures and upped the overall total from 42 to 43 players to recognize Leach (who only did it in the playoffs) -Sam 72.73.50.2 (talk) 23:58, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Seems to be comprehensive enough. But I still can't believe Gretzky never scored five in a playoff game. BTW, I suggest you create an account. Now everyone knows your IP address... Maxim(talk) 00:00, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was surprised about Gretzky, too, but I did look at several Gretzky pages and they all described his playoff hat tricks as a combination of only three and four goal games. They also never listed him as holding the record for goals in a playoff game in the lists of playoff game/season/career records -Sam 72.73.50.2 (talk) 00:02, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know about anything after 1989? ;-) Maxim(talk) 00:05, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, but according to this http://www.hhof.com/html/r&rPG.shtml and this http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FCM/is_6_32/ai_n6108292 Newsy Lalonde also shares the playoff record with a 5 goal game on 3/1/19 which would give him three for his career. -Sam 72.73.50.2 (talk) 00:18, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; I added a statement about this to the history and added the ref for Newsy. Maxim(talk) 00:28, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Eight point games?[edit]

BTW, I think it would be cool to create a separate page like that, but I can't find any sources. According to http://couchpotatohockey.com/Records/Reg_Season_Ind_Records/Points.asp there have been 13 instances in the regular season (12 eight point games plus Sittler's ten point game). There have also been two in the playoffs (Sundstrom in '88 and Lemieux in '89) that were not listed on that webpage. I wonder where that info could be found? -Sam 72.73.50.2 (talk) 16:45, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and created a page for 8 point games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_players_with_eight_or_more_points_in_an_NHL_game)... basically ripping off the format of this page. If interested, please go check it out. It could still use a little more info in terms of specific dates. Samstein (talk) 03:55, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Goalies scored upon[edit]

Was just looking through the 1998 NHL Record Book and came upon the list of 5 goal games (which is no longer included in the Record Book for some reason). It also listed who was in net when the goals were scored in, something that we might want to look into adding into this list, seeing as it is important in some aspects. After all, the NHL recorded it, so we might as well. Kaiser matias (talk) 01:16, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Might be a little tight with the images, but we could move them to the bottom of the page if they overlap. Go or it. --Krm500 (talk) 01:35, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That was the issue I saw as well. I don't really want to lose the imagaes, but still think it wouldn't hurt to have the goalies listed. I'll see what can be done. Kaiser matias (talk) 02:02, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've been thinking about the image problem for a while. Not for this particular article but in general all of our lists have many images that often overlap the tables. I was thinking about using an image gallery at the bottom of the article, for an article I'm working on. --Krm500 (talk) 02:49, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I actually think including the goalies would detract from this page. Does anyone really care about that info? Really, all we'd be doing is mucking up a nice, simple page. Plus, I imagine that many of those games would involve multiple goalies due to all the goals being scored, so that would make it even worse. If anything were to be added, I'd be more interested in just seeing who the opponent was for each game, perhaps along with an "@" to denote road game vs. home game. Though I really think the list is fine, as is. Samstein (talk) 14:02, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gretzky Photo[edit]

This may be a minor quibble: but seeing as each time Gretzky scored 5 in a game (four different times) he was a member of the Edmonton Oilers, and that his time with the New York Rangers was at the end of his career when accomplishments, other than cumulative, were few and far between for him, shouldn't the picture of him accompanying this article show him in an Oliers' uniform? I know it's a great photo, but it has little relevance to his feat here. Echoedmyron (talk) 02:27, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The same should be done with the Federov photo (which shows him as a member of the Washington Capitals while he scored his 5-goal game with the Detroit Red Wings).Sxg169 (talk) 18:46, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Gaborik photo change[edit]

Personally I prefer the previous photo of Gaborik taken the day of the 5 goal game. A photo doesn't get more relevant than that although it could use a little cropping to eliminate more of the dull background ice. Gaborik wearing a Rangers jersey looks out of place, similar to Gretzky in the Rangers jersey. 174.119.19.211 (talk) 05:26, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Flags -- old or current Canadian flag?[edit]

In the table that lists "players who scored five or more goals in multiple games", the flag for Babe Dye is the old Canadian flag while those of Newsy Lalonde, Maurice Richard and Joe Malone are the current Canadian flag. Should these be changed?

Offside?[edit]

Should there be a mention of the introduction of the offside rule during the 29-30 season since it made five-goal games harder? For reference, 17 five-goal games happened in the 12 full seasons with no offside; 44 have happened in the 90 seasons since. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:245:8200:1440:312E:7FBA:5A01:2C30 (talk) 07:56, 1 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We need to be careful to avoid original research. You would ideally need a reliable source that discusses a change in rules compared to multi-goal games. While there are sources that comment on the decrease in scoring following that offside rule, what would they say, if anything, on multi-goal games (not only five-goal games but even hat-tricks)? Five goals in a game (nhl)[edit]

Jussi Jokinen has also scored five goals in a game but his name is missing in the article 84.253.216.63 (talk) 12:11, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Jokinen is not listed as having scored five goals in a game, according to this reference:"Players with Most Goals in an NHL Game". QuantHockey. Retrieved 2022-12-12. Sxg169 (talk) 19:22, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
