Started article/list[edit]

I was writing about some New York-area reforms, and realized this central list of reforms would be a useful resources for people keeping up with what's happening as a result of the protests. The main protests article is already unwieldy, and it seems useful to have a place to keep updated with the various federal, state, and city policy proposals, laws, etc.

Here's the scope as I see it: specific policy changes or bills at any level of government, including within police departments themselves. I think it makes sense (at this point anyway) to include laws and policies that are enacted, but also those which are proposed but fail to become adopted. What I don't see as part of this is what people want in terms of policy changes (speaking both in terms of what politicians say they might like as well as what the protesters' or organizations' proposals/demands are).

As for the name, well, I gave it a try. :) Certainly open to better ideas. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 05:53, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's difficult to at a glance tell which reforms have gone through, which are being debated and which have been rejected. Would it be difficult to separate proposed reforms from reforms that have happened or perhaps it would be unwieldy to try to do so? Maybe just some formatting or leading phrase in each section? Name change[edit]

Any ideas for a name change? My suggestion for now is "List of police reforms related to the George Floyd protests." I think at a minimum the name should be changed to "List of police reforms in the United States related to the George Floyd protests" because the reforms are more of a response to the ongoing protests than to the actual killing of George Floyd. Otherwise, I would eliminate "in the United States" from the title so that the article could also include ongoing police reforms in Canada and elsewhere -- I don't think an international section would be too cumbersome on the list but eventually could be split if necessary as per List of monuments and memorials removed during the George Floyd protests and Actions against memorials in the United Kingdom during the George Floyd protests. Per those articles, I would also consider change to "during the George Floyd protests." I don't think abolition needs to be covered in the title for now, but "List of police reforms and abolition related to the George Floyd protests" might be appropriate if abolition continues outside of Minneapolis.Tvc 15 (talk) 16:00, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've been thinking about names, too, but from another angle. Legislation about no-knock warrants are related to the protests, but more about Breonna Taylor than George Floyd. So maybe something like "List of police reforms related to the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests", but then we're out of step with other article titles. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 17:56, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Some other thoughts: "List of police reforms since the killing of George Floyd" or replace with Breonna Taylor or combine the two? Some of the actions taken may the result of the what happened to George , Breonna, other police violence or the protests. But, the timing of the reforms on this list are all after the passing of Breonna and George. Jcurious (talk) 18:51, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback. (1) Are we in agreement that "in the United States" should be removed from the name? I think an international section would be appropriate toward the bottom of the article as long as the reforms listed there are related to the ongoing protests. (2) For the second half of the name, I would suggest using "George Floyd protests." It is not a perfect name for several reasons (mostly because many people have been killed including Breonna Taylor) but I think it is best here in reference to the article George Floyd protests and similar to several recent articles like List of monuments and memorials removed during the George Floyd protests.  Done This all makes sense. We can always change it later if the scope expands beyond "George Floyd protests" or split if there are a lot of international reforms. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 04:26, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
