Balance[edit]

It says in the article: "As of February 2013, the school network in Christchurch is under review to take into account earthquake-damaged facilities and changes in population since the earthquake." Well, that is the government's official line, and nobody doubts that there are adjustments needed. It has, however, been widely discussed that the government is using the opportunity that the earthquakes have presented to get charter schools into the city, changing the existing setup far more than is justified. And then there are cases where schools are proposed to close that have neither suffered damage nor falling rolls, which explains why there is so much discussion (including in the media) what the real motives might be. Anybody keen to put a bit of effort in, write this up and reference it as need be? At the moment, it looks rather unbalanced to me. Schwede66 01:27, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've simplified the statement in the meantime to a more neutral "As of February 2013, the state school network in Christchurch is under review by the Government." It doesn't give any specifics, but it does say what is going on at the moment. Lcmortensen (mailbox) 06:12, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Which suburb they are in[edit]

Thanks for your changes today Gadfium. Further illustrations of suburb address variations within the city. I noted on its website Riccarton High has its adress as Vicki St, Christchurch but the map on the site refers to Vicki St, Sockburn, Christchurch. Heaton's website places the school in Merivale. Personally I agree with you though. To me, Vicki St is firmly in Upper Riccarton, and Heaton is in Strowan but less clearly so. I am sure there are interesting histories behind all these variable addresses. Roger 8 Roger (talk) 10:20, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to change any of my suburb assignments, and to move schools between suburb articles accordingly. I usually try to put a school which carries a suburb name into that suburb even if it's slightly out of the statistical areas which I using for the demographics. Some of the statistical area boundaries don't make much sense to me, and I don't know the geography of Christchurch at all well.-gadfium 18:06, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Much of it is guesswork as suburb boundaries are not officially defined. What Google Maps uses comes from NZ Post. It’s the best there is but sometimes, it’s easy to disagree even with that. Schwede66 18:39, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Roger 8 Roger and Schwede66: What suburb does Medbury School belong in? The school website, and this list, say Fendalton. Google maps says Ilam. It's in the Ilam North statistical area. I just want to add it to the appropriate suburb article.-gadfium 03:32, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I would say Fendalton but borderline with Ilam. It is opposite Medbury Tce where the recent party murder took place and that was reported as being in Fendalton and is close to Fendalton park and the Fendalton shops. However, it is also close to the uni which is usually always taken as being in Ilam. Roger 8 Roger (talk) 04:15, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Gadfium, without consulting any other docs, I would have said Ilam. I have an old book about Fendalton and that may have a map. The library has already moved to our new house but we won’t get there until end of October. Schwede66 10:36, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
After my previous post I began leaning more to Ilam as well. It is to the west of Clyde Rd which forms a neat artificial boundary. All the other landmarks - library, open mall, park, medbury Tce, are all to the east/Fendalton side. My usual approach to the shops is along Kotare St and turn right onto Clyde (with the school at that intersection) to head to the shops, so my feeling is I have never left Fendalton. However, approaching the shops from Riccarton Rd north along Clyde I have the uni on my left and in my mind I am in Ilam. As I pass through the intersection with the school on my left on the same side as the uni, the school in my mind would be in Ilam. Interestingly, the chip shop at the group of shops is called Ilam Seafoods. I am not too familiar with how that area has developed though - something to look into when I get the time. External link use in this article is pretty excessive[edit]

The external link use in this article is pretty excessive and not really in accordance with relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines like WP:ELLIST, WP:NOTLINKFARM and WP:CS:EMBED.

The links to each school's official website are really not needed at all since this article is not intended to be a online directory for the schools mentioned within. If a school has a Wikipedia article written about it, a link to the school's website can be added there. If the school doesn't have an article written about it, then perhaps one could be written if the schools meets relevant Wikipedia notability guidelines. Regardless, all of the school's links should be removed. If the there's a Christchurch government site about that lists all of the schools in the city and provides contact information for them, then that link could probably be added to the "External links" section of this article. Such a link would be more than sufficient for Wikipedia's purposes.

The other external link issue are the embedded links in the MOE columns of the tables. These probably were initially added as a kind of embedded citation, but that citation style has been deprecated and such citations should be converted to inline citations. There are a couple of ways to do this, but change the syntax from one used for external links to one used for citations is all that's probably needed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:35, 1 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
