The first problem I see is the treatment of the so-called personal unions. In fact many states in the Absolutism age were unions of autonomous territories under the same king. More of them have been stable and endured some centuries. Single territories were autonomous about internal affairs, but they were not really independent. In fact they were dependent each other when they faced foreign affairs, since when the king declared war, the single territories were bound to enter the war. I think we should personal unions in the same way: Spain, England, Denmark, Sweden, Honenzollern, the Habsburgs, and so on. Usually we regard them as single states. So it should be better put only Spain instead of the list of the Spanish regions. Finally I mark that note 1 misses to put Milan and Mantua, which both were spanish territories.

I also observe that Ottoman tributaries were far more independent than the Spanish regions, they really had a foreign policy. So we could put them in the list. All of them, not only Transylvania.

I think also Cambodia and LanXan were siamese tributaries better than independent states.

On the contrary, generally we regard German state as independent states because they had a foreign policy, since they fought each other. And we don't consider the Holy Roman Empire as a states, but a sort of confederation or an international organization. So, I think we should put all the German states in the list. Not only the bishoprics of Mainz, Passau, Basel and the abbot of Malmedy.

The second point are the states I think have been missed: first of all Morocco, and then Mongolia, Kashgar, Turfan and the Kalmuks, and also some Italian microstates, like Monaco, Malta, Torriglia, Piombino, Massa, and others. Finally, I think that in 1660 existed the Tonga empire and the kingdom of Rapa Nui.

The last problem are the flags. In 1660 the use of flags was not yet so diffused and many of the flags depicted had not yet been created, like Brunei or the African ones.

I don't think it would be accurate to call the Kingdom of Spain a "Loose Union" at this point. (plus, added more countries

It was a Dynastic Union, but Barcelona, Valencia, Aragon, Mallorques and Sicily had their own parliaments (with 2/3 of the power of decision, and the king only the other 1/3) until Nueva Planta decrees (1716) when Castile established the right of conquest over these territories. 88.19.142.42 (talk) 10:27, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I added in all the various components of the union as separate countries, and left a footnote explaining the nature of the union on the entry for Spain. Does that work better? Orange Tuesday (talk) 19:59, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it looks better. 193.152.188.133 (talk) 07:35, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
