Scope of this list?

[edit]

If an individual held more than one consulship and only one is undated, can that person be listed here, or only if all tenures as consul are undated? It was not uncommon for individuals who held the fasces more than once to first serve as a suffect consul -- which is usually poorly documented in the surviving records -- then as ordinary consul -- which almost always is. And lists for ordinary consuls often include these undated suffect consuls in their count. -- llywrch (talk) 19:30, 25 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

My position has been that all individuals who had an undated suffect consulship throughout the Republic or Principate (up to 305 CE) should be listed here, including those who held one or more dated consulships, if only to identify an approximate date for when that undated consulship occurred. I suggest drawing the line at the undated suffects during the Dominate, given its complete devaluation in terms of career path from Constantine's reign onwards. Okay, good. In that case, you can expect this list to grow as a result of my research. There are a lot of undated consulships, more than I had thought. (The tricks for assigning dates to known suffect consulates dwindle in numbers as the Empire moves forward in time -- but you probably knew that.) -- llywrch (talk) 17:34, 6 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Another question

[edit]

Are we using abbreviated praenomina in this list, as we are in the List of Roman consuls? Or is that one the only list we intend to use that abbreviation? Either way, a lot of names will need to be modified to match the standard. -- llywrch (talk) 18:02, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Possible error in name

[edit]

The name of the man who was suffect consul in either AD 21 or 22, Gaius Asinius Pollio, might be correctly Gaius Annius Pollio. Further investigation is required. -- llywrch (talk) 07:10, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
