English-speaking universities?
[edit]Is there a list available anywhere of all French universities that offer English-language classes? That is, for English-speaking students who wish to study in France. Thanks.

Reliable Source !
[edit]I was blacklisted by talk magic because I did not mentioned "reliable source" for Rober de Sorbon. In reality I included in my modification of Robert de Sorbon the Publication of the Journal Officiel de la République Française! (i.e. an official French publication). If it is not reliable source what is it? I put also the inclusion of Robert de Sorbon in a French serious reference
I doubt that an American, speaking probabnly barely French can overpass the French government and Local specialists.
Wikipedia should be fair and not following a biased agenda. Robert de Sorbon is even if you do not like it a french registered University authorized to grant degrees! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gerovital1 (talk • contribs) 14:32, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Help needed with identification of French University
[edit]Can somebody please identify the school this guy went to (mentioned in the text of the page)?
I'm positive the spelling is incorrect, because it was translated from Persian into English.
Also, Im under the impression that the modern name of the university may be something else. Thanx.--Zereshk 05:55, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
ANSWER: It is a French Military University for Officers. The admission is very selective and is done after two years of preparatory courses (Cours de Préparation aux Grandes Ecoles) done in a Lycée after the Baccalauréat (H.S. National Examination). Those preparatory classes before exams are also very competitive and reserved to "Mention" at the Baccalaureat Holders (Honors Cum Laude minimum in the US system).
The best préparation to St. Cyr is done in the Lycée St. Louis. THIS RELIABLE INFORMATION IS GIVEN TO YOU BY THE ECOLE SUPERIEURE ROBERT DE SORBON. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gerovital1 (talk • contribs) 14:38, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
I like the French language version better. I like how it breaks the Universities up by region. Maybe someone could change the English language version to be the same? --SJK 07:49, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- Done. See List of public universities in France by academy. This is a separate page, though, because it lists only public universities, and not private universities or other institutes of higher education, such as the grandes ecoles. Note that this current page needs to be updated based upon that information. There are ninety-one public universities, and only seventy-five are currently listed here. Categorize "Grandes Ecoles" as vocational universities is completely wrong
[edit]A vocational school in the US is for professional formation. The closest to this in the French system would be the "BTS:Brevet de Technicien Superieur" or maybe "BEP:Brevet d'Etudes Professionelles". Grandes ecoles are an elitist system and the level of their students is higher than in French regular universities.
So I would list "Grandes Ecoles" as "Universities" to avoid confusing the non-expert reader. Actually, I would remove all of them and just put a link to the "Grandes Ecoles" article.

COMMENT FROM ROBERT DE SORBON; You are absolutely right and show the depth of ignorance (??) of the so called wikipedia expert in French higher education. As said before, generally you must have a Mention (honor) at ther Baccalauréat to enter a Classe préparatoire aux Grandes Ecoles. The excellent ones (Henri 4, St. Louis, Condorcet) generally ask for Bien or très bien mentions. President Chirac, Général De Gaulle, Premier Ministre Jospin, Segolène Royal went to those wrongly called vocational schools... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gerovital1 (talk • contribs) 14:44, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
PRES
[edit]We are being too hasty in labeling all university consortiums as PRESes. Most of the new consortiums do indeed take this form, but some prominent ones don't. For instance, UPMC is not a PRES. -- MyPOV (talk) 17:54, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
French Science?
[edit]What are readers supposed to understand by seeing the French Science box that we have on the right hand side of this page? While it is true that much of French science takes place at colleges and universities, so does much of French humanities, French medicine, French engineering, French arts, etc. Will we have boxes for these as well? -- MyPOV (talk) 17:57, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
- Having seen no objection, I have removed the box. MyPOV (talk) 01:27, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Usually can not provide their own degrees?
[edit]What references do we have to support the claim that "other higher education institutes usually can not provide their own degrees"? My understanding is exactly the opposite: any institution in France that wishes to can issue its own degrees. Whether those degrees are then recognized or valued by others is another question. -- MyPOV (talk) 18:04, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Lost details
[edit]It's a pity that the recent reorganization of the page has suppressed a number of hyperlinks to home pages of various institutions, and has removed the full names of universities.
While it is true that a Wikipedia article is not meant to be a collection of links, in some cases these links were the only references that we had for these institutions. For instance, the Catholic universities: the names are rendered in English, as they should be for Wikipedia articles; and we should have articles on each of these universities; but it will be a bit harder to start these articles now, because Googling the names in English will not bring you directly to the universities' home pages. It would have been better, in my opinion, to preserve these links on this discussion page, for future reference.
Further, the names of the public universities have all been replaced with abbreviated names. This is not helpful to readers who come to this article in order to search for a university by its name.

For convenience?
[edit]What is a reader supposed to understand by the statement, with regards to "other higher education institutes", that "they are however listed hereafter for convenience"? If this is an article about colleges and universities in France, then this should truly be an article about this subject, and should not divide the institutions into one set that will be taken seriously and another set that is listed, perhaps completely, perhaps not, based upon an unclear notion of "convenience". To take one example from this second set, the grandes écoles are very important in the landscape of French colleges and universities. But similarly, the Catholic universities are perfectly legitimate universities in France with the people attending them pursuing real higher education, and the professors dispensing real courses and pursuing real research. On what basis does an article on colleges and universities in France relegate them to a secondary rank that is merely "convenient" to mention? -- MyPOV (talk) 18:22, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
