major rewrite[edit]

I'm undertaking a major rewrite of this article as at present it doesn't flow very well and is at best inaccurate. Steg 18:55, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

finished most of rewrite[edit]

I've now rewritten most of the article, though obviously there is still the history section to do but I need to check dates etc for that which I don't have handy. I've omitted a few bit for the following reasons:

The village itself has existed for many years, though large scale development occurred in the early 1960's when many familes moved from the suburbs of Manchester.

Some of this will be addressed in the upcoming 'history' section but this was very vague (e.g. how many years is many? 5, 50, 500?) and seemed like speculation.

Little Lever was one of a number of villages named for the "Lever" brothers, famous for developing Soap powder ... Other "Lever" villages include "Darcy Lever" and "Great Lever".

I'm fairly certain Little Lever was known as such before the Lever brothers came to importance in the late 19th century. I seem to recall 'lever' is a corruption of a local word for something like reeds/rushes but I would have to check that.

[inserted comment by Peter] Little Lever has nothing whasoever to do with the Lever Brothers. the nearest they got was ther naming of Leverhulme Park in Darcy Lever. The history of the village goes back more than 1,000 years, that is official; and, in mythology, King Arthur and his knights are said to have camped there. That comes from the official village guidebook which the public library published some years ago. Peter 02:32, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Little Lever has the remains of the Bury - Bolton Canal which once connected Lancashire and Yorkshire.

No part of the MBB canal goes anywhere near Yorkshire! And the remnants aren't just in Little Lever.

[inserted comment by Peter] That is absolutely correct. The canal never linked to Yorkshire! It runs out to Radcliffe and Bury on the Eastern upper leg, and to Bolton on the Western upper leg. The basin was just behind the Parish Church on Churchgate in Bolton. On the lower leg from the Nob Inn (which is the correct spelling, as it used to be a pub) it runs right into Manchester. Restoration is currently pending. This is public knowledge. Peter 02:32, 12 December 2007

Little Lever's main claim to fame is just north of the Village, in a rundown former Air Raid Shelter, the first pair of Reebok Shoes were made.

Despite having lived in Little Lever for almost 30 years I've never heard of this claim. If it can be backed up with a reference than it could go in a 'triva' section. Steg 21:20, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[inserted comment by Peter] There isn't a Reebok link, and the official air-raid shelter on the edge of the village (the only one) was demolished in the seventies. Peter 02:32, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Greater Manchester County Council Arms.png[edit]

Image:Greater Manchester County Council Arms.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
