Jeremy Banning[edit]

Perhaps we should discuss the link to Jeremy Banning's site here. It seems to me a useful site with useful information relevant to the article but can understand that it might be seen as spam ( adding references with the aim of promoting the author or the work being referenced) But I think on balance it is useful which was why I put it there. If Jeremy Banning is notable then creating an article and wikilinking to it would be the way to go. An inline link isn't necessary at all and I don't think that even an EL is. The website in question gives very little, if any, additional information about the subject matter and as such is totally irrelevant. raseaCtalk to me 20:05, 10 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Reply to RaseaC - My guess is Banning might be marginal for wp:notability but thought it was nice to have the link - but I will defer to you in this. I did not include it in order to promote Banning and have no connection with him and had not heard of him till I read about this odd weapon. Manufacturer[edit]

It is suggested here http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=160870 that: "Liven's father was chairman of Ruston and Hornsby of Lincoln. I believe that he was instrumental in providing the manufacturing capacity for the Livens Large Gallery Flame Projectors which are nothing to do with the later Livens Projector" This sounds palusible BUT .. we should have reliable source perhaps. Range[edit]

Is there any reliable information on the range? My estimate for a minumum based soley on looking at the picture (and using the height of a man as around 6ft) would be about 40 yards. We don't know if the picture is when it at its maximum. We have a ref to Spartacus http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/FWWflame.htm which has a line "They also developed four 2-ton thrower that could send a flame over 30 yards." I supplied the link, I think it's a realistic range figure, especially after examining the picture of it operating, We must remember this was at a time without truly Thixotropic fuel, that would have to wait until Louis Fieser and his napalm to came around. Furthermore looking at the turbulent nature of the Fuel flow, it can be inferred that the Nozzle of the Livens was not of the efficient Laminar flow type, This would have been beneficial for range.

An Image would be nice but[edit]

The Image which is generally avaiable on the net has here http://jeremybanning.co.uk/2011/04/13/the-time-team-special-dig-at-mametz-the-evolution-and-structure-of-the-project-behind-the-search-for-the-livens-large-gallery-flame-projector/ a National Archives copyright claim but is this valid? It seems a bit old to be claiming copyright. I would have thought this "artistic work created by the United Kingdom Government is in the public domain because it is a photograph created by the United Kingdom Government and taken prior to 1 June 1957" would be OK. Added 2 images in the article (made with Blender 3d) with from original black white photos of the flamethrower. (from a project and a temporary exhibition at the historial of the great war museum > http://www.historial.org/Expositions/Expositions-a-venir/Breathing-Fire-Le-dragon-de-la-Somme I work on some other view of the flamethrower in the tunnel and flamethrower in action (flame).
