Green and Yellow

[edit]

On first hearing this, my immediate thought was its similarity to a children's song 'Green and Yellow'. This follows a similar verse structure, and and similar story - a child eats some poisonous worms, and returns to tell his mother about it, for example:

'What colour were the worms,
Henry, my son?
What colour were the worms,
My beloved one?'
'Green and yellow,
Green and yellow,
O mother come quick,
'Cause I feel very sick,
And I want to lay down and die'

Does anyone know where this originated, and whether there was any connection? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.234.252.67 (talk) 11:19, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I recall
'Where have you been all day,
Henry, my son?
Where have you been all day,
My pretty one.'
'In the woods, dear mother,
In the woods, dear mother.
Oh, mother, I feel so bad I want to lay me down and die.'
What did you in them woods?
Ate.
What was it that you ate?
Eels.
What colour was them eels?
Green and yellow.
Them eels was poisonous snakes.
Ugh.
Where shall we bury thee?
In the woods.
What colour flowers do you want?
Green and yellow.
Sung with dropped aitches, and 'green and yeller', etc.
I also have a less clear memory of something a bit closer to your version, with 'Mother be quick 'cause I'm going to be sick and lay me down to die.'
Undoubtedly variations on the Lord Randall theme, but I can shed no light on their origin. Are these debased variants of Lord Randall, or is Lord Randall an elevated form of these cruder renditions? Snugglepuss (talk) 15:10, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
