Administrator of the Diocese of Salisbury

[edit]

The succession box currently reads

Catholic Church titles
Preceded by
Edmund Audley (bishop)
Administrator of Salisbury
1524–1534
Succeeded by

However, it appears that the Vatican continued to recognize him as Administrator until (or until very close to) his death on 25 July 1539. The Calendar of State Papers for 31 Henry VIII no 1308 records that on 23 July 1539 'His Holiness gave the administration of the church of Salisbury in England to Gaspar card. Contarini'. I therefore propose to change the succession box to read that he was succeeded in 1534 by 1. Nicholas Shaxton as Church of England bishop of Salisbury. 2. Himself as Roman Catholic administrator of Salisbury (not recognized by the Crown).

I have used some shorthand to make the box more manageable.

Catholic Church titles
Preceded by
Edmund Audley (bishop)
Administrator of Salisbury
1524–1534
Succeeded by
Nicholas Shaxton
As CofE bishop of Salisbury
(unrecognized by Vatican)
Succeeded by
Himself
As RC administrator of Salisbury
(unrecognized by Crown)

There would then be another succession box covering 1534-39, showing Campeggio as preceded by himself and succeeded by Gasparo Contarini.

Catholic Church titles
Preceded by
Himself
As administrator of Salisbury
(recognized by both Crown and Vatican)
Administrator of Salisbury
(unrecognized by Crown)

1534–1539
Succeeded by
Gasparo Contarini
(administrator)
