This article lacks historical "objectivity" by omitting many facts...[edit]

For one thing, there is nothing "alleged" about the involvement of United states Marines. On the orders of John L. Stevens, United States Department of State Minister to the Kingdom oh Hawaii, a company of Marines was landed in Honolulu and position themselves facing 'Iolani Palace. The Marines were equipped with Gatling guns, revolving cannons, 14,000 rounds of ammunition, etc., - they certainly were not there on a goodwill mission.

In certain quarters, Thurston is regarded as a traitor to his country the then Kingdom of Hawaii. This is all still very "fresh" history in the minds of many Hawaiian people. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 216.211.48.147 (talk) 01:05, 28 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Also, Washington was seen by some of his countrymen as a traitor. And I doubt many Hawaiians miss absolute monarchy.

Blatant lies...[edit]

The Bayonet Constitution did NOT give European and American immigrants voting rights, THEY ALREADY HAD them. Rather it stripped all Asians of all voting rights and also imposed property restrictions in place that barred working-class people -- both native and immigrant -- from voting. According to my sources, as given in 1887 Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaii, it did allow resident aliens to vote as well as naturalized citizens. But do agree that this article is not accurate, or I should say precise. For example, Thurston was not "author" of it, but rather authored the constituion of the Hawaiian League. I think the Kinzer book is where this distortion comes from. The constitution was written by a number of different lawyers, including Thurston. I suspect his own role was amplified a bit after he bought the newspaper and bragged about it? And right, Asians were explicitly banned from voting (as would be Africans, for example, only Americans, Europeans, and Hawaiians). W Nowicki (talk) 02:29, 20 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Improved (I hope)[edit]

I tried to address some of these concerns and maintain a neutral point of view. Indeed, the US Marines were clearly involved, the question is what should be done about it. That is discussed elsewhere, so I added many links. Upgraded the pictures. I did get some conflicting info, and still cold get more details. For example, it seems he never graduated from high school, college, or law school, so "the bar" in Hawaii might have been just paying enough money to get a license.
