Origin of the name

[edit]

The name derives from "lucus" see the official homepage of the city [1]

Some names of city in Spain derive from Lucus too (Lugo in Galicia (from Lucus Augusti), Llugo in Asturias, being this Lucus named after god Lugh, worshipped in the NW area of what it is now Spain. Does this city name share the same origin?Xareu bs 10:05, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

3rd largest banking city?

[edit]

I believe that would be Basel, considering of UBS was founded there, the SBVg has one of the two headquarters there and also due to the size of the city (about 4x as large as Lugano).--Snakemike 13:16, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is, the 3rd most important financial market in Switzerland. (Not largest in population, or area). It is so important because of the italian clients. If you whant to compare Basel with Lugano you can compare these two sites privatebanking.com/user/category.jsp?location_id=2301&category_id=1&category_page_id=50&published=1&random=1 banks in Lugano and privatebanking.com/user/category.jsp?location_id=1978&category_id=1&category_page_id=0&published=1 banks in Basel. Pictures!

[edit]

Erm, am I the only one to think that we should replace, or at least add new CONTEMPORARY pictures of the city? Is there a specific reason why the only real city pictures are from one hundred years ago? I'll post some sunny pictures and add them, and maybe I'll find a great one to use an main? Sure it will serve its purpose much better. Dollvalley 23:55, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

3rd largest banking city?

[edit]

I believe that would be Basel, considering 1 / 2 of UBS was founded there, the SBVg has one of the two headquarters there and also due to the size of the city (about 4x as large as Lugano).--Snakemike 13:16, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

You have to understand that Lugano is the banking city also for a big part of the north Italy region wich, with a GNP greater than all Switzerland, is one of the region with bigger GNP in Europe.

The Consequences of Love

[edit]

I commented out the part about Paolo Sorrentino's Consequences of Love, and I'll delete it latter unless someone protests. The credits actually thank the Hotel Continental di Treviso, which if one checks their page, it indeed appear to be where it was filmed. Many of the scenes are shot in Ticino, in Lugano but also Piano di Magadino, Bellinzona, and Fox Town in Mendrisio. Anyway, many movies have been shot in Lugano and environs, why is this one special? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pugget (talkcontribs)

Demographics

[edit]

Under demographics it says that the economy is tourism-based. Is this indeed true? As the article says, Lugano is the third largest banking city in Switzerland, and I would suspect that much of the local revenue is based on banking. The original author may indeed be right that more *jobs* are supported by tourism, but sense tourism is so seasonal I find that a stretch as well. Can someone suggest a information source to clear this up? Cheers, Pugget (talk) 16:01, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can find the informations you asked here and here. In the first link it says that tourism is one of the five main sectors of the city. In the second it's written: " he tourism industry is one of the main concerns of the City; as a result of that, several public and private projects focus on the development of this industry". Momet (talk) 09:52, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I intend reverting the changes replacing Latin with Lombard. Lombard is hardly more worthy of mention than the Latin origin of the name. Also the names used in German-speaking cantons for an Italian-speaking town are probably not very notable. Any thoughts? r (talk) 22:59, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alprose Chocolate Museum

[edit]

I removed the link because the museum is unknown and for profit. Those two factors seem to disqualify it from being listed in a list of public and well-known museums in Lugano. Wikipedia is not a place to advertise every tourist curiosity. Pugget (talk) 12:30, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Errors with most articles on Swiss cities

[edit]

At the moment, all Swiss articles seem to suffer from the same problem. To begin with, would someone please how to edit the population figure in the infobox? The line with population that comes up when clicking on edit is not the one actually displayed in the infobox, the latter is not possible to access in any way I've discovered. For most cities, the population figure shown come with a reference (not found anywhere in the editable version) that does not contain any data to support the population. Quite often there's a different population figure given in the text. In other words, most articles in Swiss cities suffer from three problems:

- A population figure that it is not possible to edit.
- This population figure is usually unsourced (the source provided does not support the claim)
- A different population figure is often found in the main body of the article.

Area

[edit]

The article says:

Lugano has an area, as of 1997, of 32.09 square kilometers (12.39 sq mi).

and:

However in 2004 the municipalities of Breganzona, Cureggia, Davesco-Soragno, Gandria, Pambio-Noranco, Pazzallo, Pregassona and Viganello were incorporated into the city. In 2008, they were followed by Barbengo, Carabbia and Villa Luganese.

It logically follows that the area of Lugano now, in 2012, must be considerably greater than 32sqkm. Yet the city's own website ([2]) and the Swiss government's GIS system ([3] and click on Lugano on the map) both quote that 32sqkm figure. Something is obviously wrong, but what?. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 16:32, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The last survey that established the land area of municipalities in Ticino was done in 1997. After each merger, the 1997 areas were added together to arrive at the new area, without doing a new survey. So this sentence just needs to be reworded to make that clear.Tobyc75 (talk) 21:43, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just noticed that the airline has gone bankrupt, perhaps follow the link on the page, and update this page as a result. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.48.30.151 (talk) 17:04, 14 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
