Comment: At present there are two articles in this DAB. The better known one is Luigi de Magistris (politician). He is the mayor of Naples. There is mixed evidence as to how his name is capitalized. The Italian Wikipedia has him at it:Luigi de Magistris (lower case 'de') while they have the archbishop at it:Luigi De Magistris (arcivescovo) (upper case 'De'). This isn't a universal (i.e., outside of English) rule. I think unless there's overwhelming support for one variation or the other (i.e., the person uses that variation himself), the original should just remain as is. 72.200.151.13 (talk) 10:56, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. The general trend on Wikipedia seems to be not to capitalize the "de", "van" or "von" in European surnames, (see van (Dutch) and von, although "de" is not covered). This is also the rule in the Associated Press Stylebook. The politician Luigi de Magistris's own website writes it as "de Magistris", so I see no compelling reason to go against this. --DAJF (talk) 11:49, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The surname of the politician is effectively "de Magistris", moving it to "De Magistris" was my mistake. But the surname of the bishop was "De Magistris" and the sources confirm it! If the surname has the capital letter, it has to be written with the capital letter, it is obvious!--Maremmano (talk) 19:24, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you believe that is necessary even though the sole source provided on the article ([1]) writes his name as "Luigi de Magistris", then you will need to make a formal move request on that page's Talk page, with reasoning and reliable sources that demonstrate that his name is more commonly written as "Luigi De Magistris". --DAJF (talk) 23:41, 31 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
