Come on man! Why are you trying to justify this guy? In 2006, he called the french national football team (which includes a high number of black players) a team of "apes". I've already been in Spain and nobody never called me "mono" or even "negro de mierda". I understand that he's from another time (he was born in 1938) and that, maybe, racist statements were commonplace in those days. But hey! Franco is not anymore and you Spaniards are now part of the European Union, a community where racism is illegal. Do you have anything to support he called the French apes? I never heard such a report. Do you know that Aragonés has several nicknames, among which is "mono" (ape)? (You can check that in one of the Spanish wiki parodies)? Defending Aragonés in this case has nothing to do with democracy, Francoism or whatever demagogic arguments you may want to bring. It is common sense for any Spanish speaker that you use "de mierda" as "fucking" in English as a rude intensifier, without further implications.Pikulin (talk) 11:48, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I don't think it's the "de mierda" part that has so many people upset, it's the "negro" part. Why couldn't he just have used the Spanish word equivalent for "chump" or "loser"? Why did he have to bring race into it? That's the part that stumps me, and many others, I'm sure.

Just want to put in my two penneth on the subject. Is there anything reliable that indicates he actually used the phrase 'de mierda.' I know the Guardian is cited but I would like to see a clip of it myself. Not that the Guardian is necessarily lying. The article seems rather incomplete, I dont think after the paragraph where he lost popularity with England has anything to do with the end of his career. There is lots missing here, the Euro2008 and the Interncontinental Cup where Spain lost to the US. I do believe this manager was brilliant, Spain had about 20 winning streak that is something really hard to accomplish. I dont think his opinions outside the field should matter. I agree he should not make any racists comments publicly but if we are to look into every Manager / Coach with a scope, we would have to get into the "locker speeches" and private sessions with the players. I am not a racist either, but when I am having a conversation with someone about an Asian guy, we call him chinesse in a generic way, when we talk about an american person, we call him "gringo", when we talk about a black guy, we call him black, or for any middle east person "arabic" however these names are not intended to be despective in a conversation, they can be used in a despective way well. ... Then we should probably add that the British media completely misrepresented his words, right? "Negro de mierda" does not mean "black shit". That would be "mierda negra", and that would be extremely offensive in Spanish as well. "Negro de mierda" would be better translated as "God damn black guy", or "That accursed black guy", if English allowed "god damn" or "accursed" to be swapped with the word "shit". The British press, in their yellow and manipulative fashion, chose to translate this expression in the most harmful way towards him. And by the way, Spanish colonialism did not completely destroy the world we live in today, and didn't have the massive apartheid - or intentional genocide of swathes of people, that the British one did. So there you go.
